Sri Lanka & India to ink agreement on coal power plant in September

Sri Lanka Ministry of Power and Energy sources say the agreement between India and Sri lanka regarding the construction of a coal power plant in Sampur in Trincomalee district of the Eastern Province will be inked in the first week of September.

India's High Commissioner in Colombo Ashok K. Kantha recently said that, negotiations were completed earlier this month on agreements to set up a 500 MW power project at Sampur in Trincomalee by National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) of India and all the agreements have been initialed and will be signed shortly.

The agreements are to be signed by the secretaries of Sri Lanka and India Ministries of Power and Energy.

The construction is to begin next year and the power generation is to be linked to the national grid in 2017.

The joint venture between India's National Thermal Power Corporation and the Ceylon Electricity Board will cost US$ 500 million. It will add 500 MW to the national power grid.

How much coal does SriLanka have? Do they have to buy coal from international market?

The sub-continent in general is not particularly rich in Power plant grade coal. Even India has to import loads of coal from Australia. Colombo being the normal transit point for a lot of ships is bound to get coal cheaper than India does.

It is true that India doesn't have good coal but due to government bs and general antagonism from "tribal", we cann't even mine our own coal!

Australia exports very small quantity of thermal coal to India. Its mainly metallurgical coal that gets exported to India.
