Sri Lanka & China signs new port deal

Is that the only thing you have to say about the whole thing? I meant Dubai is a channel for shipping going through the Gulf of Oman, and that it owes its prominences partially to this.

Dubai is prominent because of its large port facilities, ship repair facilities, dry dock, Free Zone, excellent road & air connectivity and host of other factors and they serve the entire Middle East. If going by your logic Gwadar and the ports in Iran have a far greater chance in making it big than Dubai, but they didn't.

BANGLADESH IS NOT A LANDLOCKED COUNTRY. WHY DOES PAKISTAN HAVE TO GO THRU INDIA TO GO TO BD.
CENTRAL ASIA IS LANDLOCKED AND WE HAVE THE KEY. MAYBE IF INDIA PAYS A TOLL TAX, WE MAY LET THEIR STUFF THRU....

First of all learn to type in lowercase. Second I will wait for Afghanisthan to become normal & peaceful before deciding whether it is worth to pay Pakistan toll tax.

Lets just take this for what it is: 2 companies signing a port management deal.

Why would China try to encircle India?

We should instead be trying to stop the encirclement of the US on all Asian countries.

Any reason why Sri Lanka cannot build those with Chinese investment? That's ok I understand you're upset. I would be too if there was a chance that my country was going to get squeezed out of transnational shipping in its own backyard.

Good for Sri Lanka. Now only if India can actually finish dredging the Palk Strait and create a shorter route between ME and East Asia.

Because Colombo means going around Sri Lanka. India is working on creating a route between India/Sri Lanka. Currently due to shallow sea, big ships cannot use it. Won't be the case in near future. People can simply skip Sri Lanka then. More reason now for India to expedite the dredging of Palk Strait.

Do it, it wont affect us........... these days more Chinese cargo coming in

Trust me, India doesn't care about Lanka/China trade or what affects you, silly political posturing aside.. It's not about you. It's about developing India ports. Whether Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project will be economically viable or not is another thing.

China Merchants to invest $500 million in Sri Lankan port

China Merchants Group Ltd (CMG), one of the nation's largest State-owned conglomerates, is investing in a container port in Sri Lanka as it seeks to expand in South Asia.

"The Colombo South Container terminal (CST) is CMG's largest investment project overseas", and the port will have annual throughput of 2.4 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) after opening in 2013, Fu Yuning, chairman of CMG, said on Monday.

Under the agreement between CMG and the Sri Lankan government, China Merchants Holdings International (CMHI), CMG's Hong Kong-listed subsidiary, will manage the facility for 35 years.

A consortium led by CMG will invest more than $500 million to build and operate the port. CMG has a 55 percent stake in the project.

Sri Lankan conglomerate Aitken Spence PLC will hold a 30 percent stake in the project, while the Sri Lankan port authority will hold the remaining 15 percent stake.

"We are aiming to expand business opportunities in South Asia and East Africa through the establishment of the new facility, which will anchor the port of Colombo's position as a transshipment hub in South Asia," Hu Jianhua, managing director of CMHI, said on Monday.

"We're also targeting synergy between our home port and Sri Lanka and South Asia at large," Hu said.

CST, which is expected to be the largest container facility in Sri Lanka, will have a total wharf length of 1,200 meters and a depot land area of 58 hectares with a water depth of 18 meters.

The project has two phases with the first to open by early 2013.

The entire facility is scheduled for completion within five years after the contract takes effect, Hu said.

CMHI began to invest in overseas ports in 2008. In 2010, the company formed a joint venture with the China-Africa Development Fund, acquiring a 47.5 percent stake in the Tin Can Container Terminal in Lagos, Nigeria.

Actually, the only country friendly toward India is Vietnam, and that only happedn recently.

India got nothing with Taiwan, Nothing with South Korea, and almost Nothing with Japan.

Your example is not very approiate!
