I'm familiar with some of the mathematics and mechanics and I've reviewed the Space-X recovery mission plan. To carry this off so successfully is an awesome achievement. It required major advances in aerodynamic computer modeling, control systems, and computing speed as well as developing very tough mechanical and electronic components - and all of it had to work together.

1. A successor to Hubble Telescope: http://www.jwst.nasa.gov/
2. A new family of rockets (SLS): http://www.nasa.gov/feature/the-ins-and-outs-of-nasa-s-first-launch-of-sls-and-orion/
3. A new rocket engine (RS-25): http://www.nasa.gov/press-release/engine-test-marks-major-milestone-on-nasa-s-journey-to-mars/

NASA is preparing for a manned mission to planet Mars in the future. SLS and RS-25 projects are a step towards this direction.
