Internet users in South Korea are reacting to Japan’s national character represented by muted anger, masochistic apologies and gratitude for others after the Islamic State group released a video showing what appears to be the corpse of hostage Haruna Yukawa, according to a local media report.

Yukawa’s father, Shoichi, 74, told reporters at his home in Chiba Sunday after the Foreign Ministry called him to tell him that his son had been beheaded by the militants, “My mind went totally blank … I cannot find any other words.”

The father also expressed gratitude for the authorities who struggled in vain to resolve the hostage crisis as well as an apology for the public for his son causing massive trouble.

The father’s reaction has drawn mixed comments online in South Korea, with some praising Japan’s national character and others comparing their own with Japan’s, according to a Yonhap News Agency report quoted by Record China, an Internet-based news website.

“How could someone say ‘sorry’ after his son was taken hostage and murdered? I revere Japanese,” said one comment.

“I respect his calmness. I don’t like Japanese but feel envy,” another comment said.

“If South Korea is in a simiar situation, our government would surely face a barrage of criticism for its failure to rescue a hostage.”

One comment even went so far as to say that had a hostage crisis involving a South Korean had a similar outcome, a massive protest would be organized by mourning relatives against the South Korean government within a week, calling for financial compensation.

Japanese avoid giving trouble to anyone. Men from some Asian cultures, especially as older Japanese men, are expert in exhibiting calm under pressure.

Korean is the most emotionally out burst East Asian.

the father had no words for the killers IS??
i just hope they don't blame the victim for this.

I'm sure he has anger and sadness in his heart. But it is Japanese culture and custom to always show courtesy accept responsibility and blame. That is what makes our country and our culture very unique.

Nothing wrong to cry your heart out if you just lost your love one. It is bad to hide your emotion. Japanese are emotionless robots.

Very untrue, we are as emotional as any other. We , however, value the importance of showing austerity outwardly. In fact, it is a sign of great character and command of emotions --- to be able to contain one's own tears and grief. It is not good to allow oneself to surrender to grief too easily. One must be strong, whatever the odds.

Japanese are expert in maintaining composure in crisis. Other East Asian are slightly not that good but nevertheless East Asian never use crisis as opportunity to loot.

The blacks loot in every single natural disaster on their face. Even the white loot.

The reaction of the Japanese people is beautiful. No hatred, they forgive, but never forget. It's amazing and I hope we can learn from them on the tenets of tolerance and humility. Though Japan will become more active militarily, they never forget their real strength. They will never forego their tolerance and peaceful cooperation and relations with others.

While we call for blood, I remember following 9-11 so well, call for reciprocity against those who wrong us, never does one see the Japanese resort to such barbarity. Condemnation, tears, forgiveness, acceptance, but never violence or intolerance. They learned humility from their experiences with hatred prior to and during WWII. We can't seem to learn the same. I'm never ceased to be amazed at just how calm they respond to tragedies. It's amazing. Japan is a stabilizer, a force of peace, it's been proven. No matter where they go they bring peace and tolerance.

We can be sure they grieved, we can be sure they will be strong and we can be sure that the Japanese people will continue to be prudent and pursue a path of peace.

To call them robots is in-of-itself inhuman, we all deal with loss differently. They feel, they grieve, they care, they love. Japan's way of responding to tragedy is beautiful.

When looking for the path to peace, one realizes that peace is the path, and this is the path that Japan has chosen.

resorting to hatred or violence in response to violence and hatred makes you no greater than the monster who wronged you.

Japanese are extremely calm in their composure but inside, they are as cunning or as smart as all other tribes, and they are like any of the East Asians in many of their inner thoughts.

Many people wonder why a gentle Japanese can for the next moment turn kamikaze pilots or harakiri man. But in my opinion, there is no contradiction. All East Asian more or less exhibit similar behavior.

The non East Asian will not read us easily until years of immersion in our culture. But its easy for an East Asian to read another East Asian. Japan is the most consummate East Asian.
