he South Korean Prime Minister Chung Hong-Won arrived in Sri Lanka on Wednesday on a three-day official visit from August 28 - 30 aiming to further strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.

He was warmly received by Ministers S.B. Dissanayake, Felix Perera and several other government politicians at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake.

This is the first official visit of Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 1977, the South Korean Embassy in Colombo said.

The Korean Premier's visit is a direct follow-up to the discussions at a Summit meeting held by the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa with his Korean counterpart during his state visit to Seoul in April 2012.

The Korean Embassy said the Prime Minister's official visit to Sri Lanka is expected to further uplift the relationship between the two countries, especially in the field of economic development, energy and environment cooperation.

The South Korean Prime Minister will call on President Rajapaksa and also hold discussions with his Sri Lankan counterpart Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne on further strengthening bilateral relations in various fields.

Prime Minister Chung is scheduled to participate at the 'Korea-Sri Lanka Environmental Cooperation Forum'.

He will also visit the Colombo port and engage in a dialogue with the Sri Lankan university students.
