South Korea Launches 3rd Aegis-Equipped Destroyer

South Korea on March 24 launched its third destroyer equipped with the high-tech Aegis radar and weapons control system as tension remains high on the Korean peninsula, the South Korean Navy said.

The 7,600-ton KDX-III destroyer Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong will be put into service in March 2011 after test operations, the navy said.

The 548-foot-long KDX III destroyer can carry about 120 missiles and torpedoes in its vertical launch system, Yonhap news agency said.

With 300 crew members, it can also carry two mid-sized helicopters and sail at a top speed of 30 knots within a range of 630 miles, it said.

South Korea launched its first and second Aegis destroyers in 2008 and 2010, respectively, as part of a navy buildup project.

It's also seeking to buy an unspecified number of unmanned Global Hawk surveillance planes from the United States, a Defence Acquisition Programme Administration spokesman said.

Military tensions have risen sharply since the March 2010 sinking of a South Korean warship blamed on North Korea, and the North's subsequent deadly shelling of a border island in November.

. . .
I think its currently best destroyer outside US, more firepower than Type 45. Its a complete pack of advanced weapons.

A big toy for a small navy. Costs 1 billion or more.

I wish China-Pak can build together such kinda destroyers as well....:coffee:

Currently there is a batch of 4 similar boats being built for the navy, Type 052C.

Don't know the cost but should be less than that of the Korean ships.

Considered Japan and South Korea both have the Arleigh Burke class equivalent destroyer.

Pakistan Navy must equip with the Type 052C/D equivalent destroyer in the future for sure.

Although it would be nice for PN to have destroyers, I don't think we need them. Japan is an island and South Korea has water on 3 sides, most importantly, they are wealthy nations. Unless PN changes strategy and tries to project its power, I think we will continue to procure versatile submarines and frigates with our limited funds.

Pakistan should concentrate on destroyer even it is in small number other side navy is growing very fast and formidable .

I agree with you.

because of japanese constitution, japanese destroyer can't posses long range cruise missile capability that why Korean destroyer is better in this regard. Does type 052C have any long range cruise missile like Tomahawk on board???

Nope. The ships are to escort AC in the future. The long range attack ability will be provided by air-based cruise missiles.
