And in more recent times, Russia does seem interested in having some relations with Japan to help it gain leverage if China starts pushing influence into the Russian Far East or arctic region too much.

Russia routinely flies bombers circling Japan, technically Russia is still at war with Japan, no peace treaty has been signed, you serve as an US base against Russia and China in Far east, where is the home to 3 nuclear powers, China, Russia and North Korea, what do you expect Russia do other than wipe you out totally in case of war with the west.
