While I was reading military expert Dean Cheng's comparison of the reclaimed South China Sea islands and the Maginot Line, it occurred to me that China's DF-21D "carrier-killer" ASBM (anti-ship ballistic missile) will have its range extended by 1,000 miles when they're emplaced on the reclaimed South China Sea islands. This will greatly extend the no-go zone in the Pacific Ocean. From a South China Sea base, the DF-21D can strike Australian waters or deep into the Pacific Ocean.

Though Dean Cheng mentions using the reclaimed South China Sea islands as bases for China's 83 Type-022 Fast Attack Craft (FAC) missile boats, he forgot to mention the more important strategic implication of stationing DF-21D ASBMs to deter Arleigh Burke destroyers and aircraft carriers.
