South Asian countries, including India, should reduce visa restrictions, non-tariff barriers like product quotas and improving customs procedures to boost private sector-led growth and unlock the region’s vast economic potential, says a study.

The region has a potential market of 1.5 billion people, the report prepared by FICCI and Asian Development Bank (ADB) said here, adding “South Asia has the potential to be an economic power by 2025.”

“Private sector-led growth can give a major fillip and unlock the region vast economic potential if SAARC member nations initiate steps like reducing visa restrictions and non-tariff barriers, and improving customs procedures,” the report said.

Intra-regional trade remains modest compared to other parts of the world, it said, adding numerous impediments prevent the private sector from taking a bigger economic role.

The report also suggested that cutting non-physical barriers to trade and improving the climate for investment across borders will encourage greater private sector activity and strengthening regional integration.

The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) members are India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

The two-way trade between India and other South Asian nations was a meagre USD 10.3 billion in 2008-09.

Sir,I suggest you put patriotism aside and look at both angle in this issue, it is unfair to only blame Pakistan for this, It takes two hands to clap. Both are responsible for reduced trade happening today due to distrust among both of this country.

India has given pakistan a special status in trade to pakistan but they have not done the same with us.

they are using our products via Dubai etc., pay high prices for them.

But not allow them legally,

which will bring revenue to pakistani govt

pakistani people have to pay a very less price

the smugglers and illegal trade in pakistan will stop

Sir, You forgot that after Mumbai attacks, the mess created by the media totally blaming Pakistan, cause traders to lose trust in trade with Pakistan.

You also forget that India itself has no Pakistani Channels, so why should Pakistan Establish Indian channels?

However this both are just my opinions and other Pakistani's opinions could differ

However, this is just one side of the story, I am also willing to admit Pakistan's ego for not returning the "most favoured nations" favour

Thus both sides are at the wrong, not only one side. Its totally bias to say only Pakistan is at fault all the time.

leaders have to realize this so we can unleash our great potential and develop both countries with mutual understanding. look how are at loss, India is developing rapidly. we have to act now o it will be to late for us. So does India?

Look at the volume of Imports and Exports of India with Pakistan. You will understand who wants yourself. Pakistan's only major imports are the Oil and the heavy machinery that India can't provide us. Now compare the trading volume of both countries once again and you will see we import a lot more from India than comparing to India.

Why will we afraid of your TV? we have better dramas with 10-15 episodes unlike 600 episodes long indian dramas in which 200 episodes of only doing Pooja. Come to Pakistan and you will see almost all Pakistanis love watching Indian movies because of poor lollywood industry in Pakistan.

Pakistan sometimes a kind of begging from india to start talks and resolve the problems between both countries but it is only India and only india who does not want to solve these problems

Why not............... we don't start Pooja and bhaggan in any episode. We have short dramas and concentrate on stories rather than Pooja after every 5 minutes and secondly how many Pakistani channels are being broadcasted in India?

We have like in hundreds but what about in India?

which status? and secondly we don't even need any status India needs to trade with Central Asian Republic countries and Iran etc through Pakistan what are we going to trade with india? We are not going to trade in large volume with Nepal, Bhutan or Burma. India can trade with Iran, Central Asian countries and so on.

No idea but the import/export policy for both nations is very strict but still our policies are softer than india. We allow more products to be imported from India than comparing to india.

n one thing more we started developing pakistan from zero stage with no industries no universities no infrastructure n u got every thing + running industries after partition when we came on a stage when we got economic boom so called war on terror fuked our whole economy n on other side u indians are stopping water of our rivers
