NEW DELHI: Soon, women commandoes of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) may be seen fighting Naxals in the dense forests of Chhattisgarh. CRPF, the largest force engaged in anti-Maoist operations, is preparing its women battalions for combat operations and may deploy them soon, say force sources.

Deployments on experimental basis have already begun and a company was sent to Chhattisgarh's Naxal-infested jungles in Dantewada last year to conduct patrols and combing operations. "They stayed there for a week scanning the jungles and results of the experiment have been encouraging. In due course they would be deployed in Naxal areas in operational roles," said a senior officer.

It would be the first time that any paramilitary force would be deploying women commandoes in combat operations.

Sources said the experimental sojourns are also aimed at making the commandoes aware of the treacherous terrains and difficulties of operating in Chhattisgarh jungles. The force hopes that entry of women combatants will also help build bridges with the tribals and help improve human intelligence network.

Meanwhile on his penultimate day in office, CRPF DG Pranay Sahay blamed lack of participation from state police for poor success against Maoists in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. "West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh have set good examples as there is good coordination between state police and CRPF. However, in other states there is lesser degree of participation. Then, there are problems of terrain and lack of communication network," Sahay said.

He added that he had asked states facing large number of vacancies in its forces to take policemen on deputation at cutting edge level from CRPF. Notably, it was lack of coordination and paucity of state police personnel that led to the Darbha Ghati massacre of Congress cavalcade recently. The state police had provided just three policemen to each company of CRPF and they together failed to do proper road opening leading to the attacks.

Sahay also expressed his views about how forces must react while facing law and order situation. He made his statements when asked a question in connection with recent Ramban firing by BSF in Jammu & Kashmir. Sahay said, "In law and order situation forces must act with utmost restraint. At the peak of Afzal Guru hanging agitation our men suffered 500 injuries with 200 vehicles damaged but not a single shot was fired by us at the stone pelting crowds."

The DG also informed that security forces were penetrating deeper into Naxal affected areas and jungles and that it was no more possible for the red rebels to ambush and attack security forces like the deadly 2010 Dantewada ambush as the forces were now familiar with the terrain and better trained.

"The Naxals are losing out heavily. They are perturbed and I can assure that attacks like Dantewada are no more a possibility," Sahay said.

Sahay cited figures to buttress his point. "The fact that we are hitting Naxals increasingly is evident from the number of incidents as well as the number of deaths at their hands. From an all-time high of 2,258 incidents (1,005 deaths) in 2010, now it has come down to (till June) 590 incidents where 202 deaths took place," he added.
