I will be the devils advocate one again and put it in plain words what OP wanted to ask Turkish people. "You love Pakistanis but why not Bangladeshis since we were one once upon a time"

EU is getting weaker and Turkish economy is on the rise. They didn't want a Muslim country in EU now Turkish economy would be one of the largest in Europe without EU. So they want Turkey to be part of EU if Turkey decides to change it's way.
Turkey us definitely better off without EU. In the long term D-8 will be more economically beneficial than EU anyway.

Living in Europe for last 2 years I was surprised to see that Turks are generally seen negatively. Erdogan might have a lot of negatives but in Europe he is disliked solely because he isn't a yes man to USA.
That being said, I do think there are a lot of wrongs in Turkey's middle policies.
