About 40 strategic bombers will participate in five-day drills in Russia’s Maritime Territory near the Japanese border, Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Vladimir Drik said on Monday.

The long-range aviation exercise, which started earlier in the day, includes aerial bombing and launches of airborne cruise missiles at the Litovka test range, he said.

Other training missions will include aerial patrol and midair refueling.

About 30 crews of Tu-95MS Bear strategic bombers, some 10 crews of Tu-22M3 Backfire bombers and two Il-78 aerial tankers will participate.

Japan has been concerned by Russian warplane flights near its coast.

In early February, a total of five Russian aircraft, including two Tu-95 Bear strategic bombers, two Su-24 Fencer reconnaissance planes and an A-50 Mainstay airborne early warning and control aircraft flew close to Japanese territory, without intruding into its airspace, however.

They were shadowed by Japanese Air Self Defense Force F-15 and F-16 fighter aircraft.

Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force had to scramble fighter jets in response to flights by Russian military aircraft near Japanese airspace on Wednesday, Kyodo news agency said on Thursday citing the Defense Ministry.

According to the ministry, a total of five Russian planes, including two Tu-95 Bear strategic bombers, two Su-24 Fencer reconnaissance planes and an A-50 Mainstay airborne early warning and control aircraft skirted Japanese territory on Wednesday.

“They flew over the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan off Hokkaido and the Tohoku region in northeastern Japan,” Japanese officials said, adding that it was the first time a Russian AWACS plane was spotted near Japan.

Russia resumed strategic bomber patrol flights over the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic oceans in August 2007.

Yesterday’s flights by Russian Air Force aircraft close to the coast of Japan were carried out strictly in accordance with international rules and took place over international waters, air force spokesman Col. Vladimir Drik said on Thursday.

“All flights by air force aircraft were carried out and are carried out in strict accordance with international rules on use of airspace above international waters, and not violating the borders of other states,” he said.

“They were escorted by on their flights by Japanese Air Self Defense Force F-15 and F-16 fighter aircraft,” Drik said.

Pakistan really doesnt have a foreign policy of its own imo..First it was a follower of USA foreign policy and now shifting to being a Chinese follower.. Hence the new found love for Russia ;)

Agreed. Pakistan did not receive even 1/4th of the help that India received from USSR/Russia. They did a big mistake by opting for a traitor ally 10000 km away.

It would be much better for both pakistan and India to settle their kashmir and territorial dispute and align themselves in SCO.

did not know you guys were Russian supporters mate.:woot:

Pakistans foreigns policy is as simple as this .... Pakistans friends enemies friends enemies enemies friends enemies are its friends ....lol

on a serious note , Pakistan worked along with Taliban and USA to throw Russians out of Afghan and Russians helped India in 1971 to break Pakistan into two yet they cheer for Russia .... strange !!!

Japan should arm herself quickly if she wants to get back her lost glory. The pacifists constitution is a real pain in the *** for
Japanese nationalists who are gaining influence.
