The proper procedure is something like this

The infantry pop smoke, the aircrew then tell the infantry what colour smoke he saw and the infantry would reply if the aircrew have the correct smoke, if not, the infantry have to throw again.

that's Infrared Strobe....

It's kind of hard to replicate an IR Strobe...

If the enemy has the same IR strobe ....and both parties throw it at each other ....the air strike would become hell confused
