A soldier shot dead his company commander and injured a junior officer at an army camp in Jaffna on Thursday. He was overpowered and remanded to custody.
The soldier was depressed and wanted to sort out some issue with his girlfriend, said the Jaffna Security Forces Commander Mahinda Hathurisinghe, over the phone. He wanted to take his weapon out of the [Chavakacheri] camp and his company commander tried to stop him. The soldier fired at this point, killing one and injuring another, he told The Hindu.
Both the killed and injured officers were Second Lieutenants. A court of inquiry has been ordered.
This is the first instance in the recent past of a soldier turning against his own officer in the Sri Lankan army.
Observers here said they were unable to recall any similar incident ever since the army comprehensively destroyed the Tamil Tigers in May 2009.
