A soldier was killed and another injured in an ongoing gunfight with the militants in Pandushan village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Friday.

The gunfight broke out at around 1:30 am after a joint team Army’s 34RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in the village.

An army spokesman confirmed the death of a soldier and injuries to another.

He identified the slain as sepoy Rambir of 8 JAT, presently posted with 34 RR. The injured was identified as sepoy Deepak.

The spokesman said the gunfight was underway when last reports came.

The area has been cordoned off by the security forces, Jammu and Kashmir, Police said. The encounter is currently underway. Further details are awaited.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident in the same district an army vehicle of the 55 Rashtriya Rifle also suffered minor damage after being targeted by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in South Kashmir's Shopian district earlier on Friday. No injury or casualties were reported in the incident.


The incident occurred in Zahid Bagh wachi village of south Kashmir's Shopian district where the IED was planted along the road.

On 31 July, two terrorists were gunned down by security forces in Kanzalwan village of Gurez sector.

The soldiers who lost their lives in the incident were identified as Ramesh Kumar from Haryana's Jhajjar, Nirod Sarma from Assam's Nalbari, Satendra Kumar from Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar, Mahesh Kumar Kushwaha from Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur and Sandeep Yadav from Madhya Pradesh's Dewas.

The incident, which occurred ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra, was condemned by politicians cutting across party lines. A civilian was also injured in the crossfire.
