DEHRADUN: Indian Army soldier, Naik Deepak Nainwal, 35, from Dehradun’s Harrawala who was injured in an encounter last month in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag died in Pune on Sunday. Nainwal got hit by a bullet in his spine and was admitted to Delhi’s Army Research and Referral hospital from where he was shifted to Pune, where he died.

Nainwal was from Mahar Regiment and was posted in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam in Anantnag district. During an encounter on April 10, he got hit in the spine by a bullet after which he was admitted to Delhi’s Army Research and Referral hospital. After having received treatment in Delhi for about a month he was transferred to military hospital in Pune.

Nainwal’s family members were informed about his deteriorating condition on Saturday evening and on Sunday morning they got a call from the hospital about his death. “We got a call from the hospital on Saturday that Deepak’s condition is deteriorating and around 7 am on Sunday we got another call informing us about his death,” said Pradeep Nainwal, Deepak younger brother.

Deepak’s family alleged that the facilities at the hospital in Pune were not good and his condition got worse after he was shifted there. “Deepak was transferred to a hospital in Pune that specializes in treating paralysis. But his condition started to worsen when he was shifted there. Not a single day passed when he didn’t puke in this hospital, he was much better in Delhi,” said Pradeep.

According to Pradeep, after 17 years of service in the Army, Deepak was set to retire from service soon and had even filed for retirement and was heading home the next day for holidays. Deepak is survived by his wife, children and parents.

Deepak’s body will be carried to Dehradun on Monday afternoon and his last rites will be performed on the same day. “We do not want to delay the last rites because and that’s why we have asked the officials to book an early morning flight so we can go to Haridwar for cremation before evening,” Pradeep said.
