First test firing of PJ-10 aka Brahmos missile way back in 2001 , provided much needed forward thrust to Indian missile program, Development of BrahMos, not only provided much needed self boost but also opened up funds for more all round development of array of indigenous missiles . Western media wayback had put India way behind Arch Rivals Pakistan in Missile Program. ‘

Fast forward to 2014, Indian Missile program not only covered lost ground but also produced world class missile systems in short period of time. now India can surely brag that it has one of the most active, modern and advance missile programs in Asia, if not the world .

what Next ? Could be the obvious question put forward to DRDO , idrw.org is giving a sneak peek of India’s New missiles under rumured to be under development .

LR-SAM & MR-SAM : Indo-Israeli first joint venture has lead to development of two Surface to Air missile (SAM) variants , 70-km missile LR-SAM will provide main defence against aircraft, anti-ship missiles, and UAVs to Indian Naval ships . while MR-SAM is the same missile but an Air Force version, which will be capable of intercepting enemy aircraft and missiles within a 70-kilometer range and also provide Aerial cover to Airbase and Important Military installation . Missile has undergone tests in Israel and soon will be tested in India . Missile program has seen some delays due to technical glitches and also due to dispute in terms of TOT between Agencies .

BrahMos 2 : A scaled down model of Brahmos-II was first showcased at Aero India 2013, BrahMos 2 is next step and worthy successor to Brahmos 1 missile, Brahmos-II which will have a scramjet engine in place of ramjet, will have speeds in excess of Mach 5 -7 , BrahMos 2 will be a Hypersonic missile again jointly developed between India and Russia and will have limited range of 290km . DRDO plans to test the missile in 2017 .

Maitri missile : Another Joint venture , but this time with french. Maitri is a SR-SAM ( Short Range Surface to Air Missile system ) whith range from 6 to 15 km , to provide Quick reaction defence against cruise missiles, and aircrafts . Dubbed has Tri-service missile ,Maitri missile will be Inducted into all three service arm of Indian armed force . Failure of Trishul Program had left lot of vacuum for a low level Quick reaction missile at close range . Maitri missile will replace Barak-I in Indian naval ships and argument with SPYDER Air Defence Missile System fielded by IAF .

Astra anti-aircraft missile system : DRDO has pitched a spin off version, of using combination of surface-to-air versions of Astra MK1 and Astra Mk-2 has a low-level quick-reaction surface-to-air missile system capable of engaging aircraft, helicopters, uav drones and precision-guided munitions. Short and Medium Range Mobile Air Defense Systems like Israeli SPYDER Air Defence Missile System . DRDO if ever gets go ahead will cover gap between 15km to 55 km and will argument with Akash SAM systems .

LRCM : Long-Range Cruise Missile (LRCM) was first revealed by DRDO way back in 2010 , LRCM powered by Indigenous Liquid Fuel Ramjet technology ( LFRJ ) will be Supersonic cruise missile with a range of at least 600-km at 3.2 Mach. while LCRM will overcome biggest obstacle BrahMos-1 Missile faces, that is its 290 km range limit due to MTCR. Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) which Russia is a signatory prohibits joint development of missiles with over 300 km range . LCRM will borrow heavily from BrahMos program and plans to come in Surface to surface , surface to sea , ship to ship and Air to surface variants , covering all roles which Brahmos variants are used by Indian armed forces . DRDO has not provided any timeline for its first test flight or current status of the program .

Astra MK-2 : Delays and false starts in Astra MK-1 Project allowed Astra MK-2 Project team to catch up with Astra MK-1 project team and also learn from the mistakes committed by earlier team on Astra , Mark-II version will be able to hit enemy aircraft over 100km away . DRDO which has successfully tested fired Astra MK-1 from Sukhoi-30 this year, has promised first ground testing of Mark-II version by year end .

Anti-Radiation Missile (ARM) : Last year for first time , DRDO revealed that a new state-of-the art, anti-radiation missile that can target enemy radars and communication facilities will be developed. single-stage, liquid-propelled system already has been given Go Ahead by government and new air-to-surface 100-km range tactical missile will be able to pick up radiation or signals emitted by radars and communication systems, home on to the target and destroys the network. DRDO plans to test the missile in 2017-18 period .

New Long Range SAM : DRDO Chief also for first time revealed development of new 150 km Long Range Surface to air ( SAM) missile with ABM capabilities , unnamed project likely will be spin off ABM technology currently under development under Indian Ballistic Missile Defense Program , Not much has been revealed about the missile by DRDO.

BMD Phase II : DRDO will soon start development of Two new anti ballistic missiles that can intercept IRBMs. Missiles dubbed has AD-1 and AD-2 will be developed under Phase-II program under India’s Ballistic Missile Defense Program . Missiles under Phase-II will be able to Intercept missiles 5000km far away both at exo and endo-atmospheric and will be comparable to American THAAD missiles .

Agni- VI : DRDO is developing an intercontinental ballistic missile with range of 6000 km . Agni VI is expected to have Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Warheads as well as Maneuverable Reentry Vehicle (MaRV). While missile likely to be dubbed has 6000 km range missile, but actually will be able to hit targets in range of 8000 to 10000 km . While Western countries for past few years, have been pressuring India to put Cap on development of Agni series of missiles , more pressure has been asserted after India successfully tested Agni-V , which is dubbed has China specific missile .

K-5 : India’s Next submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) developed by DRDO has been under wraps for some time now , While K-5 will have range in excess of 6000 km . there is some confusion if the missile will be based on Agni-VI or will be completely different missile. DRDO’s own media house had hinted SLBM variant of Agni-VI under development . DRDO has not put any timeline for the first test of the missile, but like every Missile from Super secretive K Series of SLBM developed by DRDO, We might hear about them only after Dozen launches .

ASAT : DRDO has been very vocal that India has the capability and technology to develop Anti-Satellite Missiles , but not much information has been provided of any development . Media reports had hinted that Agni missile will be modified to carry out first simulated electronic test, to showcase ASAT capability and India will not ever Publicise any test if and when it will be carried out .

An unknown missile undergoing RCS testing in NAL's EM laboratories, found it in an NAL document from last year. This can be either of Air Launched Article (ALA) or the Anti radiation missile.

I am sure they meant intercepting missiles fired from 5000 km away .

Yes, which means IRBM-to-ICBM class missiles.

LRCM and the new SAM are the ones I wanna see.

This should be among the top priorities. 600km and Mach 3.2 top speed are great specs for a RAMJET missile.
Both land & air-launched versions should be developed.

The new 150-km SAM, I would say, should be implemented on IN vessels. It should be able to fit in Barak-8 launchers.

Why does India wish to build all of these WMDs instead of building a civilization that could inspire the rest of the world?

Why does India wish to build all of these WMDs instead of building a civilization that could inspire the rest of the world?

Let me explain our actions in the simplest manner possible.

There was once a rich farmer who owned a sprawling farmhouse in the middle of his farmland. In an area known for robberies and encroachment, there'd been no attempts on him or his property. So, a news-reporter decided to interview him.

The interview went well, and towards the end of the interview, the reporter asked, "So, How are your neighbors? Do you trust them? "

The farmer replied, "Yes yes, very trustworthy, very honest folks".

"But I noticed you have kept a gun in the Drawing hall. I can't imagine you needing that."

The farmer smiled, and pulling out his pipe said, "That, son, is to keep them honest"

We trust you, as Manmohan Singh said in his capacity as the PM of India, but we would prefer to ensure you do not get the chance for breaking our trust

Astra MK 2 will have Mach 3.5 speed and shall be 100+ KM Range. MK1 was advertised as 44 KM range missile but tested for 65 KM range and that too at a low altitude.

LRCM is in final stage of testing. Hot weather trial in September 2014.

Anti radiation missile has 140 KM range and it can trace the radar even if radar stops imitating radar wave. First test is likely in 2016.
