In another achievement of Sri Lanka’s free health service, it was slated to be declared the first tropical country in the world that had eradicated Malaria, by end of 2015, by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Director General Health Services, Dr. Palitha Mahipala said this declaration was possible as not even a single case of Malaria was reported since 2012 October.

If Sri Lanka is lucky enough to remain malaria free up to October 2015, the country will be eligible to apply to the World Health Organization for malaria-free certification, Dr. Mahipala added.

Addressing a media conference held at Government Information Department today (21) Dr. Mahipala said it would be a great feat in the country’s heath service if the WHO declares Sri Lanka, Malaria free, as this remarkable success was achieved rapidly and largely during a protracted civil war.

Sri Lanka in 2012 recorded the lowest number of malaria cases since 1963. The number of malaria cases has declined significantly over the last 12 years from 210,039 in 2000 to 23 cases in 2012.

@Gibbs and @Established_1965 Congrats to both of your countries. And I am gonna feel proud about the fact that Tamil is an official language in both these countries:tongue:  (Ok...Don't gang up on me. I know that did not contribute)

Spread of disease is more aggressive in Urban areas than rural. My point is "Title" is misleading :D

Malaria is more rural based disease actually.. Thats why it's been near impossible to eradicate in Sub Saharan Africa and South America..

Sri Lanka has been Malaria free except for it's Northern province for decades.. Remember there was a intense civil war going on for 30 years over there.. It's a miracle it self that within a short period of 5 years they have managed to gain zero infections there.. Kudos to Singapore.. But their task would have been much easier

Now Dengue fever is a urban vector born disease.. And No tropical country yet to eradicate that..

Wow, great job! I must say. Hope we can replicate it here in India but I doubt it will be successful due to the vast size of India. Sri Lanka is making great progress!

How to get anything done in India is a paradox.. Given it's magnitude, complexity and population.. India eradicating polio should be considered a modern day wonder.. Stupendous achievement..

As far as SL goes.. They have eradicated almost every infectious disease except for Dengue and HIV.. The task is to keep it free in the future
