SL ranked 61st in World Prosperity Index ::: Dailymirror.lk ::: Breaking News

Sri Lanka has ranked 61st globally in the 2015 Prosperity Index released by London-based the Legatum Institute on Monday.

The index measures the well-being of a country’s people and its wealth taking 142 countries across eight sub- categories into consideration: the Economy, Entrepreneurship and Opportunity, Governance, Education, Health, Safety and Security, Personal Freedom and Social Capital.

In the Prosperity Index, Sri Lanka has moved up a notch to the 61st place in overall prosperity since 2014. According to the index Sri Lanka was ranked 58 in 2012 and moved down to the 60th rank in 2013.

“Sri Lanka’s best performance is in the social capital sub-index, where it ranks 32nd and lowest rank is in the safety and security sub-index where it ranks 113th,”the index said.

According to the index, Nepal has ranked 89th, India 99th, Bangladesh 103rd, Pakistan 130th and Afghanistan 141st.

This year’s Prosperity Index reveals that Indonesia has made the most radical improvements since 2009, and that the least prosperous countries are in Sub-Saharan Africa. For the seventh year running, Norway is the most prosperous country in the world.

Haha so true.

Sri Lanka is effed beyond belief.

How things have changed!

Bags full of garbage strewn across the road, crows peck away and flies swarm the area — these are the sights that greet passersby. This is amidst the recently paved streets and the newly constructed jogging tracks along the Mattakkuliya road, Elakanda.

The garbage trucks have not visited this area for nearly a month, the Sunday Times learns. As a result the area residents dump their trash on the streets. Bags of garbage are also left by the side of the Hendala- Elakanda road.

The situation is no different in other parts of the Western Province, with Kalutara, Panadura, Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia and certain areas of Colombo facing similar garbage problems.

Yahapalanaya shining.

It's too easy to criticize from a far away country about things in Sri Lanka.

Yep , thats the third world
Its a shame that 2015 was wasted on political issues and elections. The general election was postponed too much or development could have started way before.
The plan for development will be released tomorrow which is said to be based on the manifestos of UNP,SLFP and JVP
According to statements from Politicians Sri Lanka will go for a Social market economic model

But the the biggest problems facing SL are the typical Third world problems like outdated education system ,low and pathetic tax revenues ,weak and corrupt institutions etc. We also suffer from a lot of Tax evasion

Education reforms are on the way and I hope they are successful. The Govt is planning to increase education spending by 4 times and if good reforms don't come the money will be wasted
Educational reforms within a month - Hiru News - Srilanka's Number One News Portal

Streamlining the tax system and reforms are also proposed
Reforming SOEs that are making millions of losses while having thousands of extra staff that it doesn't need(typical third world ) are also proposed but its going to be harder than the rest. Some hard and unpopular decisions should be taken on that side

The elections are over now so now there should be more attention on development and economic reforms.

Unless sl puts its human right record straight, there is always a danger looming over it. Had Tamil problem not heppaned, SL would have been a much more developed country by now.

Please keep your yahapalanaya propaganda to yourself.

Sri Lanka has turned into a basket case.
