JI, PML-F lend support to N sit-in, PTI does a somersault
LAHORE - Jamaat-i-Islami and Pakistan Muslim League-Functional of Pir Pagara on Sunday announced to join the opposition’s sit-in outside the Parliament House and march toward the Election Commission office. But Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) decided to take a u-turn on party leader Imran Khan’s announcement to participate in the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led protest, noting that joining the show of their ‘arch foe’ could prove a political blow to the party. The PML-N top leadership had announced on January 26 that they would march from parliament to election commission office to make the body more powerful and impartial during their protest drive in the federal capital which would also focus on law and order situation in Balochistan and Karachi. On Sunday, PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali contacted JI Secretary General Liaquat Baloch on telephone and discussed with him the prevailing situation in the country, the forthcoming elections, formation of interim government and the opposition’s sit-in.Nisar invited the JI to join their sit-in and march. Welcoming their decision, Liaqat Baloch said the JI would join the protest. Baloch noted that the Supreme Court orders for verification of votes and delimitation Karachi constituencies were not being implemented. Nisar also asked the JI leadership to propose the names of caretaker PM and CMs so that opposition’s candidates could be finalised.Later in the day, a PML-F spokesman said in a statement that party chief Pir Pagara Sibghtullah Shah has decided to join the opposition protest for strengthening of the election commission. Party sources said Muzzafar Hussain Shah will lead the PML-F at the sit-in.On the other hand, Imran Khan’s abrupt announcement on Sunday to join PML-N protest took the party by storm as most of the main party leaders criticised him for committing a ‘political blunder’. Soon after PTI chairman announced his party would participate in PML-N march, a meeting of party’s central political strategy committee was called. When contacted, some central leaders of the party said that the announcement was like a ‘bombshell’ for them. They said the PML-N was their main political foe in the next general elections and their participation in an event called by the current rulers of Punjab will damage the party as it will be against the spirit of their agenda of change.Prominent among the leaders at the meeting were Imran Khan, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Javed Hashmi, Jehangir Tareen, Arif Alvi and Shafqat Mehmood. Imran Khan reportedly promised in the meeting to remain careful in the future while making policy statements and major announcements, and PTI strategy committee agreed that they would launch their own show focusing the dual office of the President when the time comes.PTI sources said only two to three committee members didn’t oppose Imran’s action. However, a veteran leader from southern Punjab said Imran’s announcement could be based on sincere intentions to empower the election commission but being chief of a major party he should not allow emotions to influence his political decisions. He said “We are building a political campaign over major rivalry with PML-N in Punjab and suddenly our party chairman announces to join their protest call; this has hit the morale of the party leaders and workers”.
