SINGAPORE: Apache

Boeing has confirmed that the AH-64D is the last contender in an Indian air force competition for 22 attack helicopters and a deal to sell 36 AH-6I light attack helicopters to Saudi Arabia has been finalised.

Mark Kronenberg, Boeing's vice-president for international development, said the Apache is the "last man standing" in India and Boeing is the sole bidder for the contract. Boeing is in final negotiations with India's ministry of defence, and hopes for a final decision by the end of the second quarter.

Late last year, Indian and Russian media reported that the other contender in the competition, Russia's Mil Mi-28, had been eliminated. The reports indicated that the Mi-28 failed to meet several of the Indian air force's technical requirements.

Kronenberg was speaking to defence journalists at a media roundtable held on the sidelines of the Singapore Airshow.

He added that a long-awaited deal to sell 36 AH-6I light attack helicopters to Saudi Arabia has also been officially closed, making the Middle Eastern nation the launch customer for the type.

Boeing sees considerable opportunities for the AH-6I in Southeast Asia, with a number of countries having expressed interest. He singled out the Philippines as a particularly strong candidate for the AH-6I.

Kronenberg added that Boeing sees strong opportunities in the international maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) market. He acknowledged that some countries may not need the full capabilities embodied in the 737-based P-8 Poseidon, but that Boeing is looking at ways to either scale back the P-8's capabilities for such customers, or integrate limited P-8 capabilities onto smaller platforms.

Nothing before March when the next budget is coming. Pranab da has reportedly admitted of having sleepless nights because of the massive spending by govt this year (which is not a bad thing per se). The fiscal deficit is probably going to be 5.5% instead of 4.7% as promised in the FY11 budget.

No MMRCA, Apache, Heavy lift helicopters, follow up on C130js, C-17s etc before March. :P

What is the maximum altitude AH-64D can reach?

Post-kargil we certainly need gunships that can reach high altitudes.

LCH is in Lighter Category. It will be Inducted in Greater Numbers.

Apache ( Falls in Heavy Category ) and will be Inducted in fewer Numbers, 22 Initially.

unless we don't get familiar with whats cutting edge..we wont be able to improve our indigenous products with as much efficiency.

on top of that India Pilots also need to have sufficient experience on the best platforms so as to provide valid and innovative tips on what to improve in our own products.

i hope this clears it.

The Apache is a VERY different beast to LCH. The Apache is a heavy lift attack helo and is the most advanced attack helo on the planet bar none with every possible technological advancement embodied on the platform. Whereas the LCH is, as the name suggests. a lighter platform but still very deadly and VERY advanced.

But India can't go into building Apache-like helos right off the bat it needs to learn how to walk (LCH) before it can sprint.

Hey we are getting just one squadron of Apaches along with spares. This hardly scratches our attack helicopter/gunship requirements. These are basically to replace the old Mi 24/35s we have. The LCH will come in large numbers.

PS: I will however not replace my avatar pic. Kind of like the Mi 24s. :smitten:

The Mi-53s were UPG'd by IAI/IMI in 2006-7 with addition of modern avionics like EW suites/counter measures, glass cockpit ,FLIR and turret mounted MG (as well as other techs). But that doesn't mean they can compete with the AH-64 Blk.III- NO WAY!!!!
