KARACHI: Three suspected militants were killed in an `encounter’ in Surjani Town here on Wednesday night, officials said.

Law-enforcement personnel during routine patrolling at Northern Bypass signalled the suspects to stop but they opted to open fire at the troops, resulting in injuries to one soldier, said the Rangers’ spokesperson. The troops chased the fleeing suspects and after an exchange of fire, three suspects were killed and a fourth escaped in the cover of darkness.

The deceased were identified as Anwar, Shere Raheem and Nasrullah, who belonged to the outlawed Tehreek Taliban Pakistan (Khan Zaman group), said Karachi West SSP, Azfar Mahesar.

He said one policeman had also been injured in the shootout.

KARACHI:
Rangers troops killed nine suspected terrorists and criminals in separate operations in Karachi late on Wednesday night.

According to sources, four suspected terrorists were killed in the city’s Janjal Goth locality. The paramilitary troops had been conducting a search for hideouts belonging to banned outfits in the area. The suspects opened fire on Rangers laying a cordon as part of the operation and were killed in the resultant exchange of fire, they said.

Three more suspected terrorists were killed in a similar incident in Karachi’s Northern Bypass area. Sources said Rangers troops, who were on a routine patrol, came under fire when they signalled the suspects to stop upon seeing suspicious activity. A security official was injured in the attack.

The paramilitary troops gave chase and cornered the suspects. Three suspects were killed in the ensuing exchange of fire while one of them managed to escape under the cover of darkness, according to sources. The police, who reached the scene of crime soon after the incident, were conducting a search for the missing suspect as this report was filed.

Meanwhile, Rangers killed two suspected gangsters, said to belong to the Ashok group, during an intelligence-driven search for the gang’s hideouts in Karachi’s Chanesar Goth. Sources said the suspects opened fire upon spotting Rangers troops conducting the operation but were killed in the ensuing firefight. The deceased suspects have been identified as Nadir Baloch and Wajahat Ali, both members of the Ashok group, they said. The suspects were wanted for dozens of killings and other crimes, the sources added.
