Sikh kidnapped in Peshawar

Amritsar,Punjab: Another abduction of a Sikh businessman of Peshawar in less than three months time has raised question mark on the safety of minority Sikh community of Pakistan.

According to reports an influential businessmen of Qaidabad in Peshawar was allegedly kidnapped by some unidentified persons. Reports suggests that while Raghbir Singh was returning from Gurdwara after offering prayers a few armed men overpowered him and forcibly pushed him in the car and took him away.

A local Sikh leader Sahib Singh reluctantly told TOI over phone on Wednesday, ” Yes, Raghbir Singh, a cloth dealer has been kidnapped but we don’t know who has done it “.

He said they were not aware of the group involved behind Raghbir’s kidnapping and the family had not received any ransom call from the abductors as yet.

Director United Sikhs Mejinderpal Kaur informed that Raghbir singh , 40 years old has 4 children aged 15, 13, 10 and 3 years. She said that the Peshawar chief minister’s advisor, Haroon Bailour, visited Raghbir Singh’s family and assured them that the government will do its best to secure his release within three days.

“The Sikh community cannot be complacent about this assurance as Mahinder Singh, who was kidnapped in the same area in November last year, was found beheaded and decapitated two month’s later. ” she.While condemning the incident UK based advocate and right activist Jes Uppal said that right groups in Pakistan should take up the issue of safety of minorities including Sikhs in Pakistan. “I am hopeful that Pak government will ensure safety of all minorities” she said.Advisor Sikh Awareness Society, UK, Ashish Joshi said, ” These extremist groups are prejudiced towards Sikhs and Hindus whom they see as ‘Kaffirs’ and are attempting an ethnic cleansing of minorities from Pakistan – to finish off what was not completed in 1947″ while suggesting that such acts should not be tolerated.

Please visit the peaceful Lahore sikh areas. Naankana sahib and gurduwara and Hasan ebdaal city and I challege you to find such bigotry from muslims to sikhs there.... Which proofs in peaceful locations sikhs are not facing any discriminatin and bigotry

as far as hindus are concerned. There are 100+ hindu students studying alone in Comsats Institute of Information technology on goverment scholarships for talented students and majority are from sindh.

Same is the case with NUST, UET Lahore, GIKI and FAST.

Washington, Jan 10: Strongly condemning the murder of Sikh-Canadian woman Rajvinder Kaur Gill and the beheading of Mohinder Singh in Pakistan, the Sikh community in the US today demanded protection of minorities in that country.

In a statement, United Sikhs – a Sikh advocacy group – demanded that the government protect minorities in Pakistan and pay compensation to the families of the victims.

It also called on the government in Pakistan to secure the safety of all minorities.

“United Sikhs appeals for donations for Mohinder Singh’s family,” the statement said.

Tawheedul Islam, a pro-government militia of Zakhakhel tribesmen in Pakistan’s lawless tribal belt, claimed responsibility for the beheading of 40-year-old Singh, whom it accused of acting as a “spy” for a rival outfit.

Singh was kidnapped from his shop in Tabbai village of Khyber Agency by unidentified armed men on November 20, 2012.

Singh was beheaded and his body was mutilated before it was packed in a sack and dumped at Zakhakhel Bazaar in Khyber Agency on January 7, 2013.

A note left with the body said Singh had been killed for spying for a rival militant group, the Lashkar-e-Islam.

The body was identified by this brother Daswant Singh and was cremated in Peshawar yesterday. Singh is survived by his wife and nine children, including a polio-affected son.

40-year-old Kaur, a Canadian Sikh businesswoman, went missing on August 25, the day she arrived in Pakistan, and was later found murdered by Shahid, a German national of Pakistani origin who owed her money and his accomplice Hafiz.

She was invited into entering Pakistan for a diamond auction in Lahore. Hafiz told police that his cousin, Shahid and he plotted to kill her.

KARACHI: Pakistani Hindus on Sunday protested the destruction of a Hindu temple in Karachi. The temple was razed, along with some nearby homes, by a builder.

Minority Hindus have complained of increasing harassment and discrimination in Muslim-dominated Pakistan in recent years, including the destruction or desecration of their places of worship.

Residents and members of the Hindu community said on Sunday a builder with a police escort razed the small temple in one of the older neighborhoods of Karachi, along with some surrounding buildings.

The outer walls and roof of the temple were demolished, and rubble was strewn about the area. Local residents told an AP reporter on the scene that authorities took statues and artifacts out of the building before it was destroyed.

One of the longtime residents, 75-year-old Kali Das, said he was born in the area and remembers when the temple, called Sri Rama Peer Naval, was built. He said more than a hundred families lived nearby and prayed at the temple.

Residents protested at the Karachi Press Club on Sunday, demanding compensation as well as the return of religious materials they said were taken during the incident.

Ramesh Kumar Vankwani from the Pakistan Hindu Council said there is a long-running legal dispute between the builder and residents over the land, but it belongs to the Hindu residents.

Zeenat Ahmad, who runs the department in charge of military land, said a court order allowed some of the buildings to be razed. A Pakistani police officer, Parvez Iqbal, denied anything was taken.

The military owns vast tracts of land in Karachi and other parts of the country. Vankwani said the incident was another example of the problems Hindus are facing in Pakistan.

Hindus complain that girls are forcibly converted to Islam, there is no legal recognition for Hindu marriages, and Hindus are discriminated against when it comes to access to government jobs or schooling.

”Every month there is an incident, like taking property of Hindu people or forced conversion of Hindu girls,” he said.

During partition in 1947, the violent separation of Pakistan and India into separate countries, hundreds of thousands of Hindus decided to migrate to India, where Hinduism is the dominant religion.

Those who remained and their descendants now make up a tiny fraction of Pakistan’s estimated 190 million citizens. Most live in Sindh province in the southern part of the country.
