RAWALPINDI: Major General (retd) Syed Asif Riaz Bukhari, Sitara-e-Basalat and a Siachen war hero, died on Sunday, says an ISPR press release. He had participated in an infantry attack on an Indian position in 1971 in East Pakistan in which he was severely wounded and lost an eye. Later, in 1989 under his bold command, forces of Siachen Brigade evicted the Indians from a 22,158 feet high KK peak, which is a world record for ground combat. The operation was conducted by slinging one man at a time with Lama helicopters to the top to fight Indians. The operation has been globally recognised for its professionalism and courage, and served as the basis for popular TV drama ‘Alpha, Bravo, Charlie’. Maj Gen (retd) Syed Asif is survived by his widow, two sons and a daughter.
