Ship begins 50-day patrol of Nansha Islands - People's Daily Online July 11, 2011
At 10:30 a.m. on July 10, China Fisheries Administration Ship No. 46012 sailed from Xiuying harbor of Haikou to carry out a 50-day fishery escort and patrol mission at the Nansha Islands and surrounding waters in the South China Sea.
This mission is responsible for fishery administration and safeguarding the Meiji reef. The ships crew will be on duty 24 hours a day in case of any possible emergencies. The fishery patrol mission will focus on wiping out illegal activities, such as capturing marine wildlife, collecting coral, unlicensed fishing and trespassing.
The ship carries a total of 22 fishery crew members and it contains enough supplies, including fresh water, food and medicine, to last for 60 days.
Zhao Zhongshe, head of the Hainan Provincial Department of Ocean and Fisheries, said this patrol mission highlights China's sovereignty and jurisdiction over the Nansha Islands and surrounding waters in the South China Sea. It aims to maintain China's legal ocean rights, safeguard China's fishing boats and provide necessary assistance.
