Two brave CRPF Cobra officers were conferred the Shaurya Chakra gallantry award at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday by President Pranab Mukherjee for the encounter in November 2011 that resulted in the death of dreaded Naxal commander Koteshwar Rao, alias Kishanji. Both the officers Nagendra Singh and Vinoj P.
Joseph are assistant commandants in the CRPF. Meanwhile, in New Delhi on Saturday, IAF sources said a unit of the modern Mi-17 V5 helicopters would be based at Nagpur while an attachment of the helicopters would be placed at Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh which would be used for casualty-evacuation in anti-naxal operations.
The armed Mi-17 V5 Russian-manufactured helicopters will equip the IAF to defend itself more formidably in the wake of any attack by Naxalites. The Mi-17 V5 helicopter, with sophisticated Russian and Western avionics, is equipped to fire rockets and these could be used by the IAF helicopters if they are attacked by naxalites while landing or taking off.
This helicopter falls in the category of armed helicopter, with substantial and effective firepower with the latest and more powerful engines that will greatly enhance its payload carriage capability at higher altitudes. Mi-17 V5, an upgrade of Mi-17 in the medium-lift category, is equipped with state-of-the-art avionics and onboard navigation systems, the IAF had said earlier.
An Indian Air Force officer, Squadron Leader A.B. Vasane, who was flying a MiG-29 fighter aircraft on October 10, 2011, was also conferred the Shaurya Chakra for safely executing an emergency landing after fire broke out during the flight in the head-up display (HUD) of the aircraft.
Another IAF officer, Wing Commander V.K. Singh, was also conferred the Shaurya Chakra for landing an IAF helicopter safely with 17 persons on board on December 19, 2011, after the helicopter was hit by naxal gunfire over Chhattisgarh.
Several Army personnel, including officers and personnel below officer rank (PBORs), were also awarded the Shaurya Chakra for gallantry displayed during counter-insurgency operations in J&K and the Northeast. So far as the death of Kishanji is concerned, the encounter had taken place on November 24, 2011, at Midnapur in West Bengal. During the encounter, Nagendra Singh was hit and injured with a grenade splinter but the two officers decided to advance nevertheless, following which a fierce gun-battle took place. After the firing stopped, a thorough search of the area was carried out in which one dead body with one AK-47 in his hands was found. The dead body was later identified to be of Koteshwar Rao alias Kishanji, the government said on Saturday. The pilot (Sq. Ldr. Vasane) tried to douse the fire with his hands but had to discontinue the attempts as the molten plastic started to burn his gloves and fingers. In these circumstance, he initiated emergency recovery of the aircraft, the government said.
