Sharif’s statement on Ahmadis angers clerics

ISLAMABAD: Top leaders of an organisation representing Deobandi madrassas across the country have reprimanded PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif for calling members of the Ahmadiyya community as “brothers” of Muslims.

“Sharif should be ashamed of calling them brothers of Muslims,” said a statement issued by the Wafaqul Madaris al Arabia (WMA).

Sharif said in Lahore on Saturday that Ahmadis were as important citizens of Pakistan as people from other religions and called them an asset.

He made the statement to express solidarity with the Ahmadiyya community following last month’s two synchronised attacks on their places of worship in Lahore which claimed more than 80 lives with many more injured.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, leaders of the Wafaqul Madaris al Arabia – an umbrella organisation of more than 12,000 Deobandi madrassas – called Ahmadis “traitors”.

WMA leaders Maulana Salimullah Khan and Qari Hafeez Jahalindri urged Sharif to retract his statement and advised him not to “defy religion for petty political gains.”

The statement termed the Ahmadis as “infidels” and said that they could not be brothers of Muslims until they convert to Islam again.

Ahmadis were declared a minority under the 1973 constitution – a move that some people believe intensified hatred against Ahmadis.

LAHORE—Pakistan Muslim League (PMLN) Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif has said that the government should focus to hiking of prices and unemployment. Talking to media persons here on Saturday, Nawaz Sharif said that people of the country were facing massive problems like prices hike and unemployment and urged the government to take comprehensive steps for enhancing investments in the country for providing relives to the people.

“Today people are recalling steps PMLN government took to increase investment in the country,” he said adding that people were benefited through theses investments. He said the government should give special attention to price hike and unemployment in the country, which he said were the root cause of most of the problems faced by the countrymen.

The PMLN chief said that it was nations which fight terrorism, and not the governments, and urged the masses to forge unity among their ranks to fight the menace of terrorism as well as to resolve their problems. “Terrorists have no religion and no limits. They can attack anyone anywhere,” he said and condemned the attack at Qadyanis’ worship places in Lahore. Mian Nawaz Sharif said the minorities were also part of this nation and an asset to the country and added that it was the responsibly of the government to provide protection to everyone.

PML-N Chief Mian Nawaz Sharif said that nations have to struggle against terrorism adding that governments alone cannot eliminate the menace of terrorism and extremism. Talking to media on Saturday, he said that Nation should get united to eliminate the menace of terrorism from the country as the government alone cannot do anything concrete against the increasing terrorism incidents in the country.

He also termed terrorists attack at the worship places of Ahmadis in model town and Ghari Shahu condemnable adding that Ahmadis are our brethren and asset for the country. He also informed that the elements involved in firing at Ahmadis worship places have been arrested and law enforcement agencies have been carrying out investigations with them.

Tehreek-e-Khatme-Nabuwat has meanwhile warned Nawaz Sharif against making such statements if he still wants to stay popular with his voters.

I am very surprised at this statement, considering the relation Sharif has with religious groups. It is refreshing to hear such things especially from a person like Nawaz Sharif and I commend him for this.

Please note this story is a few days old and Sharif has not retracted his statement. Another stupendous thing is that Sharif never said that Ahmadies were brother of Muslims, his statement was just that they are our brethren much like any other Pakistani from any religious background. Nothing wrong in that and such attitude should be encouraged.

In India, there are around 30,000 operating madrasahs but they are quite liberal.

You will not believe that Deoband and Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind even invites religious leaders from different religions to interact and give speeches to scholars and followers.

But, petro dollar funded ideology is also reaching here to spread distorted teachings.

Mr. Sharif should clear up his position with detail. Did he mean that Ahamedis are also muslim like Sunni and Shia or he just mean that they are brother as the citizen of same country.?

I agree with Mir. Sharif that they are citizen of Pakistan so they are equally important as others.

Right thing to do. No one should suppport this killing eventhough they are trying to dilute Islam under the shadow of Islam.

There should be no doubt that Ahmedis are none-Muslim. Ahmedis can not be brother of Muslim like one muslim to another however they should be treated like other minorites like Sikh, Hindu and Christian.
