In the wake of several recent cases involving alleged information leaks on the iPhone, growing numbers of public servants in Shanghai have embraced domestic brand mobile phones with encryption services based on the CDMA (code division multiple access) services offered by China Telecom, according to the Shanghai Morning Post.

"People could steal information related to government policies by eavesdropping on my mobile phone calls or hacking my memory card," said one civil servant.

"Many civil servants have switched from iPhones or Samsung models to encrypted models made domestically, considerably boosting our workload, in order to help them transfer their stored information to the new phones and get familiar with the encryption functions," said a mobile phone sales representative in the city, adding that to meet the surge in demand for this kind of model he often has to ask his supplier in Shenzhen for 500-1,000 handsets at a time.

The paper reported that China Telecom is only one among the nation's three major carriers capable of providing encrypted mobile services. There are now 22 domestic models with these functions on the market, including models from Coolpad, Huawei and Hisense.

Encrypted Coolpad S6, a 4G model priced at 1,900 yuan (US$310), is the most popular model among Shanghai civil servants. A higher-end model of the brand, priced at 3,980 yuan (US$645), has been adopted by many businesspeople in the city.
