Shahbar zaidi ...ban imports...

I've seen central african cities that went through civil war in past become much more developed and cleaner than our mainstream Pakistani cities(islamabad is an exception)..this was my moment of truth. Since then I realized the problem of Pakistan is the psyche of people and their culture itself and politicians is just a byproduct of it. When we decide to divide ourselves based on groups rather than homogenouising our identity like what happened to post french revolution France which was earlier much like present day Pakistan with people of different culture and language... We dont understand each other so we are in a constant state of conflict. Here we have idiots who want maximum autonomy for their provinces..people in respectable under developed countries drive old cars in clean surroundings..we drive expensive cars among cingchis and heaps of garbage... we believe importing cellphones and cars is more important than investing in local manufacturers..this psyche of show off will never end..
Very true , people from the subcontinent suffer from same problem .

There is a post in economic section claiming petrol prices will rise by 45 rupees now. Shahbaz is delivering the right action and fixing PTI's policy mistakes
Petrol should not be subsidised , at least on cars . Mass transit busses should get subsidy .

.
The problem is, in 2021
Pakistan total Exports were 25 Billion dollars.
While Import of only Fuel Oil and Heavy Machinery was 25 Billion dollars.
Not even mentioning other inevitable imports like Medicines , Electronics , Services , military Hardware , Raw materials for industry, Automobiles , Parts etc.
Total imports were more then 50 billion dollars.
It cannot be controlled by Imports. Only was is increasing exports.
Its nearly unfixable considering you have to compete with China India Bangladesh Vietnam.
We are not even in the picture with Bangladesh and India Industry wise. Forget China and East Asia.
Forget the stupid "Stretegic position" and "Defined Destiny" Nation needs to work its a** out , control population , Make favorable business environment , stop military adventures and make close ties with big economies.
So much needs to be done. So So many reforms. All problems cannot even be discussed in a single post.

1- energy independence--hydro/solar
--little work done on solar side

2- food independence
Very little work done
Currently oil, tea, sugar beet, pulses, milk products bill is 4 billion dollars these are easily susbitutable on few years

3- small energering products mobile phones
Bill of 1b$
Mobile phones attracted attention, quiet abit work done

4- cotton
A raw product since our production halved
Some work done

5- refined oil
we have no oil refineries
little work done on this
4+b $ imports of refined oil and oil products

We are more interested in giving petrol subsidy and builing 3 b$ orange line(instead of builing a cheap bus metro) rather then fixing these issues
It's not all doom and gloom

If we get rid of ishaaq daar and anyone following his lazy import based economic policies

Yes, it is a patriotic move that will come at a great political cost. Such sudden increase will upset many, but Pakistan needs to be ready to face IMF soon to shore up reserves and arrest currency slide.

Also, please note that just increasing exports is not enough. Pakistan has to show improvement in trade deficit. Pakistan's trade deficit was at an all time high last year. But I'm not sure if that has resulted in an increase in ratio of deficit to GDP.

Some points are valid and we need to increase our export.
Our businessmen/exporters only concentrate on a few traditional items. What we are exporting, in the summer is mangoes, winter Kinos, and the rest Mehran Masalah/Shan Masalah/National Masalah. Rooh-Afza, Jam-e-Sheeren could be the part of the list. Basically, Pakistan is a nation of 'Khao Peo tay Pakrai na Deo'. Huge populated countries need big economies and Pakistan's economy even could not generate the revenue of a firm in the USA/West/India.

Our issues are not from 2021 but when we took the 'kashkol' and start wandering for charity, baksheesh, or alms, it started long back and still we are on such crutches:

The date of this cartoon is the best part of it. Seems like some people within Pakistan have been pushing for self reliance since the beginning. Unfortunately, their dream is yet unfulfilled. Hope the new government can lead the country to dawn

Why doesn’t Showbaz explore importing oil/wheat from Russia.

Sure, removing oil subsidies is the right thing, but you can’t have it both ways.

Blame Imran Khan for giving subsidies and at the same time no plan to mitigate the risks of importing oil at high prices.

There should be 2 days ban per week on petrol at the pumps. Tue and Friday. Petrol consumption should be contained step by step just like CNG. People should be discourage from unnecessary travel. Heavy trollers and trucks generally use diesel so cannot ban that.

No one is saying its doom and gloom. Its just that you cannot control trade deficit by reducing import as is commonly believed. You cannot stop import of fuel , Medicine , Raw materials. And we need to work VERY VERY hard to get out of this debt trap trust me. Ita not just a matter of few policy adjustments

2021 was for reference as the latest figures. Problem basically escalated after 2000 when Pakistan startes to develelop rapidly with modernization of living standards. Our industrial output should have matched the economic growth. And Transition to service sector from Agriculture and manufacture. Unfortunately from 2000 to 2010 it never happened. Most economics dont really talk aboit 2000-2010 period.
In a layman term we ate too much and disnt exercise so became fat and got deseases

Contrary to what PDM stooges would have us believe the economy is still in satisfactory shape at the moment.

Remove fuel subsidies, start importing oil/wheat from Russia at discounted rates, keep the Ehsaas program going, don’t tamper with Overseas Pakistanis vote as it might impact remittances.

But we know the PDM wont take that route. Another miscalculation was the neutrals thought once they surrendered IMF, Saudis, UAE will shower Pakistan with loans.

Now, a few months of paralysis and we’ll reach a point of no return.

Even banning imports won't do much. The largest imports for us are still petroleum products, palm oil, and wheat. These cannot be banned.

Banning the import of cars and non-essential goods might give a respite of a billion or two, but I don't believe that it would do anything significant. Moreover, if we ban import of cars, Malick will do a show the next day about how the govt is colluding with local assemblers. Media nay hi is mulk main itni anni machayi hui hai. Inflation and all other metrics are poorer now than a month ago, but you don't see them blaring on headlines all the time now do you?

We are stuck in this not due to policies or events of the past year, but of the past decade where our exports were stagnant.

Think of it like this. You are running a home and have a fixed income. You cannot say keh main apnay ghar main khana nhn lata, zaroorat ki cheezain nhn khareedta aur guzara karta hoon. Unless you increase your salary, you are in bad shape. The exports are our salary.

Countries like UAE and KSA etc can get away with an import based and service oriented economy, we cannot. That is why the N and Ishaq Dar mindset for the economy is bound to fail.

but its got nothing to do with being part of a certain region.

True, Pakistanis have inherited the quintessential slave mentality of the subcontinent whereas the Indians truly are the masters of their domain and have regained control their destiny, exude confidence and are ever willing to take on what may come...

While Mushy was handing over innocent Pakistanis handing over fist for a measly $5K a pop to Amreeka Bahadur, Indian gov't was severing diplomatic relations and reading the riot act to Western gov't that were merely harassing Indian origin Muslim citizens...
