A national consensus may set off the government to ban Jamaat-e-Islami and its student front Islami Chhatra Shibir from politics, an Awami League leader said on Tuesday.

Joint General Secretary Mahbub-Ul Alam Hanif’s comment on the widely discussed topic that the political parties accused of war crimes during 1971 should be banned came during a press conference at his party President’s Dhanmondi office.

The government may step in to outlaw such the parties only if that is what the people want, he added.

“If demanded by the people of the country, the government has the right to implement the decision taken by the people.”

Hanif was replying to the question whether Jamaat could be banned for the spate of violence it has unleashed over the past few months.

“But, it requires a national consensus,” he added. “The country’s major opposition party, the BNP, is still patronising Jamaat and Shibir. There will be a lot of obstacles if such a decision is to be taken without national consensus under the circumstances.”

The International Crimes Tribunal in its first verdict recently said evidence proved Jamaat-e-Islami had assisted the Pakistan army by raising ‘armed forces’ during the War of Independence in the name of protecting Pakistan.

The verdict sentenced former Jamaat leader Abul Kalam Azad alias Bachchu ******* to death for crimes against humanity.

Hanif castigated the BNP for forging alliance with Jamaat.

“The entire country is concerned after witnessing the violence the Jamaat and Shibir had unleashed (Monday). But we have not seen the BNP concerned at all.”

“Rather, the leader of the opposition sat in a meeting with them in the evening.”

Jamaat supporters resorted to violent demonstrations across the country once again on Monday after a pause of several days to force the government to release its top leaders standing trial at the ICT for alleged war crimes.

The demonstration includes sudden attacks on police that injured at least 21 in Dhaka, including the Motijheel Police Station’s Officer in-Charge Hayatuzzaman.

At least five vehicles were set alight only in the capital while more than 200 were vandalised countrywide as the violence raged.

Media reports suggest, while visiting an injured police officer at Rajarbagh Police Hospital, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Benazir Ahmed ordered police to shoot at Shibir activists on sight.

Asked why the Awami League was hesitant despite enjoying a two-thirds majority in Parliament, Hanif said, “Law cannot be passed all the time merely based on majority.”

Replying to a question whether the administration failed to prevent Jamaat and Shibir from running riot, Hanif said, “I think the law-enforcing agency is being patient in dealing with the situation. So I would not call it a failure.”

He, however, thought Jamaat and Shibir taking out processions and holding rallies in the areas banned for political activities amounts to some failure on the part of the law enforcers deployed there.

“The law-enforcing agencies have been ordered to resist any such violence in future with full force.”

Asked about the government’s plan of action against those financing the parties, he said, “Right at the moment the government is only concerned about execution of the war crimes trial. Stern action will be ensured gradually against the organsiations funding militancy.”

Janata Bank Chairman Abul Barakat recently suggested confiscating and nationalising all financial institutions tied to Jamaat-e-Islami.

Sahbag is NO square. And there are hundred of million of Bangladeshis want to ban Awami League only reason they can gather and voice their demand because of repressive police brutality and Awami kangaroo court. Awami League under multiple pressures and to cover up Padma bridge corruption/failure, economic failures are trying to use the issue as diversion. If Awami league sees things getting even harder they will try to initiate civil war and alreay in path to build their war criminal rap sheet.

There are thousands also making prayer for those who lost their life facing Awami League terrorism.

Janaza Salah for those who killed by Awami League on be half of those attending Shabag farce

Jammat- Shibir are desperate and now spreading lots of propaganda and rumor using fake email id, facebook account and through photo shop. For this they have also opened couple of pages in facebook. One of such low quality photoshop propaganda has been detected...

With the supporting crowds swelling and the list of high-profile celebrity and political endorsements growing, the protesting youths are preparing for their ‘grand rally’ at 3pm on Friday at Shahbagh.

The protest, that has resonated among the mass, rolled into a third straight day on Thursday and is expected to turn massive at the place they have dubbed as ‘Prajanma Chattar.

The organisers have called upon every citizen to join their on-going movement and chant slogans demanding death penalty for Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Molla.

The war crimes trial campaign, which bloggers took to Shahbagh, has also helped the freedom fighters regain their lost confidence in the youth.

Amiruddin Ahmed, a resident of Dhanmondi’s Shankar, was among the thousands of people who have joined the protest at Shahbagh.

“After coming here I have realised that the national flag is secure at the hands of our children,” he said.

The sexagenarian freedom fighter, who came there with his wife Rijia Amir, became quite emotional:” I pray from my heart that they grow big in life.”

Many of the 1971 ‘Golden Generation’ like Ahmed have found their hangout at ‘Prajonma Chatar’ to fresh draw inspiration.

The agitation for the demand spread across the country after a handful of protesters had started it on Tuesday at Shahbagh.

The Centre for Policy Dialogue and Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal took out a procession that started from the Dhaka University’s Doyel Chattar and ended at Bahadur Shah Park at Old Dhaka. Sector Commanders’ Forum has observed a programme at the Central Shaheed Minar with similar demand.

Leaders of several political parties and other organisations visited the scene and expressed solidarity with the protestors in the last two days amid growing popular buzz.

The protestors, however, snubbed Awami League Joint Secretary General and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Special Assistant Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif on Thursday afternoon. He was denied the opportunity to deliver a speech and hurled with water bottles.

Awami League Presidium Member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury had visited Shahbagh Wednesday on night, but she also returned without making a speech.

However, several Awami League leaders earlier visited Shahbagh and expressed their solidarity with the protestors.

As soon as Hanif left the spot, an announcement from the main stage said no political leader will be allowed to speak at Friday’s rally.

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 pronounced life in prison for Molla on Tuesday.

An internet activist body, Blogger and Online Activist Forum, rejected the verdict as ‘too light’ hours after the judgement was delivered and called for a protest at Shahbagh.

People from other districts have started to flood the venue ahead of Friday’s programme.

The protestors have been singing, reciting poems, shouting slogans, screening films and making speeches.

Students from schools, colleges and universities sporting the nation flag on their heads started thronging the area since Thursday morning

More and more joined in as the day wore on, mostly young men and women, some with musical instruments to play. Many carried the national flag.

At around 10:30pm, it was announced that students of some of the universities in the United Kingdom have lent their support to the protest.

Students of the Faculty of Fine Arts are drawing images on the streets stretching from Shahbagh to International Crime tribunal.

A mass signature campaign was conducted on Thursday demanding capital punishment to war criminals.

The protestors say they will stay put until their demands are met.

Stop your nonsense ... Shahbag protesters are all ordinary people and it has not been organized by any political or only political party activists are not attending there. There is a grand rally at 3 pm... then you will see. This is the demand of whole Bangladesh that they want death penalty of these war criminals. There is no denial in it. For your further information today all political party's leaders have been banned from giving any speech at Shahbagh and even yesterday Awami league Secretary Hanif was beaten by crowds at Shahbagh when he was trying to give speech. Even there is rumor that Government is very anxious about this rally as they are fearing this can turn out to be a movement of bringing down the government. So government has mobilized all the detective agencies for gathering information about the protesters and who are behind these protest. So please stop talking nonsense and accept the fact that Jamaat's day are numbered.

For your information Ashraful Islam Ratul was a fake profile most likely created by Shibir for spreading propaganda. In all facebook pages chagu's are posting with fake profile. That account is now deactivated. N what do you want to proof by re posting the Kobi's posted picture?? Regardless of whoever are the organizer it is important to see whether general public are supporting that or not. In this case you have seen it by your own and also going to see how general public are reacting to it and showing solidarity to it.

Are indian razakars like you true patriots?

Weren't you in Kolkata to get treated and if I remember correctly you were very grateful towards the West bengali doctor. I see you are paying in kind.

It doesn't matter what you call us, does French care what people of Mali call them? :p:

I'm grateful to people not to any country and I've seen several times how you paid your kind regarding your origin. What went wrong in my comments though not clear to me.

Yeah...the French and Mali comparison has been great, just see the ranking of France (your lala land) and Mali from where you migrated :

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2102rank.html

Now go figure. Should you need some such more comparisons please let me know.
