severe earthquake jolts california major cities

.
Oh big deal. Just a minor shaker. People are having a cow for nothing....

You go to the ocean and your boat will rock back and forth more than this.

Jeeez.

.
it has affected buildings in losvegas and losangelas and if more severe earthqake hits these cities it will cause major destruction as they are highly populated and buildings are very costly there.Such earthquakes are indication that in future more severe earthquake may jolt this region as fault line seems to be activated again after 20yrs.oving of boat cannot be compared to earthquake as later damages buildings.

This 7.1 that hit on July 05 was second one in as many days with the same area hit by a 6.4 on July 4!!

And 7.1 is quite massive to be honest, specially considering that the depth was just around 17 Km!! That is quite massive. For reference, Kashmir earthquake of 2005 was 7.6 with 15 km depth (though i think that one lasted much longer and had a massive upthrust)

. .
This quake is quite large though the worst is expected to be over now because this large quake and hundreds of after shocks is reducing the huge energy built up on the Earth's crust from underneath.

With reduced pressure beneath the crust, the affected location will be safer in next few decades. It is like pressure boiler, every time huge pressure is released it will take time to build it up again.

The one on July 4 lasted max 10 seconds. The one yesterday lasted a good minute and a half and was a milder rolling sideways motion compared to the July 4 jolt which was quite a bit sharper I'd say and a few soft aftershocks.

This is unsettling to a lot of people who are not used to seeing the ground move.

I have been in quakes far sharper in motion in earlier years and have seen the ground settle down a good three/four inches with a huge "thump" with accompanying noise.

Gotta get used to it when you live in LA.

The Latest: Official: Quake damage not as bad as expected

authorities say there are no deaths or major building damage reported from the quake, which struck at 8:19 p.m. Friday

Meanwhile not even a month ago back in June a certain country got hit with only a 6.0 and had over a dozen killed and major damage to 20,000 homes...

It depends on duration of earthquake and nature of movement of waves and if damage is less it not indicates totally infrastructure strength as in Pakistan we have 8.1 magnitude earthquake few years ago and its damage was much less than 7.6 magnitude earthquake in 2005

Pakistani village folk live in risky rammed-earth or rock-wall (generally structurally unstable) settlements which give way to destruction too easily during shakers. Plus there are rock slides in Mountain areas as well. That is why you have that sort of casualty rate. Plus civil defense and first-responder activity may take weeks in remote areas.

Sorry for the off-topic segway.

The difference between 7.0 and 8.0 are several magnitudes higher in the richter scale.
