The order is the first extra vessel added to Italy's initial six-strong PPA contract that signed in May; the contract included an option for four more.
The latest contract was placed on behalf of the navy by Europe's Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) with the RTI consortium formed by Fincantieri and Finmeccanica (through its subsidiary Selex ES).
The PPAs form part of the Italian Navy's EUR5.4 billion (USD5.8 billion) fleet renewal programme, which was launched this year. By the end of 2015, the Italian Navy will have all of the planned vessels on order, including the seven PPAs, a logistic support ship (LSS), a landing helicopter dock (LHD), and two high-speed multirole vessels for special operations.
The LSS was ordered by OCCAR in May alongside the PPAs, while the LHD was ordered by the Ministry of Defence in July. Speaking at the end of October, the navy's chief of staff Admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi said: "The two high-speed multirole vessels for special operations are expected to be contracted [by the end of] December 2015".
Together, these vessels largely will use up the EUR5.4 billion budget allocation, so the procurement of any of the three other PPAs under option will have to be covered by extra budgetary funding. One PPA is scheduled to be delivered per year between 2021 and 2026, with the exception of two being delivered in 2024.
