yes they do, this is what americans did since 100 years showing their new yorker skycrapers and cement the image of endless opportunities in comparison to europe, the sky is the limit.
That's part of the reason. The other reason is real-estate economics: when the land on which you are building is expensive, you need to build "up" to maximize your ROI on that piece of land.
Famous story about John Pierpont "J.P." Morgan: when he built his offices near Wall Street, he deliberately made them only one story tall.
