The M-84AB1, the latest upgrade of M-84 MBT (Main Battle Tank) series in service with the Serbian armed forces offer the same level of protection and fire power as the Russian-made main battle tank T-90. The M-84AB1 is fitted with active optoelectronic protection system - SOFTKILL, based on integration of laser detection device, radar detection device and smoke grenade launcher with efficient smoke grenade in the visible spectrum, IR, thermal and milimeter radar spectra.

Model M-84 AB1 represents the last - the actual variant of modern combat tank which development is based on the modification and modernization of the basic version M-84 i.e. M-84 AB.

The upgrade has improved a main tank performance parameters: fire power, protection and maneuverability, as well as has improved tank combat readiness and reliability and gives a new features and performances regarding possibility for MBT integration in to modern network-centric battlefield.

The main armament of the M-84AB1 consists of an improved 125-mm smoothbore gun which uses a carousel automatic loader. Second armament includes one Remotely Controlled Weapon Station armed with a 7.62mm machine gun.

The M-84AB1 is equipped with a new fire control system (FCS) which enables rapid preparation for fire engagement, high accuracy in range measurement and high first round kill probability either in motion or standstill, both day and night. The new FCS solution enables the commander to take the gunner’s role in case of emergency and to fire at selected targets.

Standard armour of the M-84AB1 includes explosive-reactive armor of second generation providing far better protection against heat and subcaliber projectiles.

To increase its self-protection, the M-84AB1 is fitted with the Shtora, an electro-optical active protection system designed to disrupt the laser target designation and rangefinders of incoming anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs).

The M-84AB1 is also equipped with the UORZ, an advanced digital broadband band radar warning receiver which automatically detects, identifies and alerts the crew to each threat. It determines the emitter’s direction and mode of operation such as search, track and missile guidance. As a part of a threat warning system, it is central hub for integrating other Electronic Warfare (EW) sensors and countermeasures.

T-72 and it's derivatives are deathtraps. russia makes good ATGM to destroy it's weak tanks.

konkurs,metis-m,kornet. and it's RPGs

Russia has already developed a RPG to counter APS.

IIRC even the usa forbade the iraqi army to procur rpg29 vampirs in view of its lethality against M1 abhrams.

RPG 29 is strong against a weak tank and a weak crew, and it's also strong against a strong tank and weak crew.

RPG-29 would not be as effective against an Abrams and U.S ground forces, but against Iraqi military which lacks leadership and training that could easily could get within 50 meters of an Abrams and hit it in it's weak spot.

the banning of RPG-29 was more for the sake of the Iraqi forces than our fear of it, and as we all seen Iraqi forces abandon their weapons without destroying them.

no tank is invincible even T-14.

RPG-29 penetrated the front of a Challenger 2 but it wasn't a catastrophic kill like it would of been against a T-72/T90

penetrated it's butt through the engine and hit the ammo carousel. what a major design flaw, and it even caused the main gun to go off and smoke like a chimney, lol

if you want a tank buy west or Chinese.

Even the latest Chinese tank is a copy of a Russian design.

true that. existing soviet/russian designs are a child of a different school of thought...crew survivability was later down the rung. Having said that the next thing being unmanned turrets for a lower silhouette & better crew protection..which reminds me..isnt the T14 quite high? :undecided:

unmanned turret will make T-14 more safe for it's crew, but we still haven't seen it in action against ATGM.

gotta think a top attack ATGM with pentreation over 800 would get all the way down where the crew is in the chassis.

but I dunno. defiantly the future though

In Gulf War (1990-1991), Kuwait M84 machines simply dominated Iraqi T72 in any areas. Kuwait generals once said that it is theirs "T-34". So I really believe in this conclusion, this tank is one of the best in third generation tanks.

question is when i can afford to buy latest ferrari then why would i buy "something like a ferrari" ?

.
in what way

Type_99_MBT_front_right.jpg

maybe the chassis is, but the turret electronics, gun, and ammo is all chinese

In-hull carroussel autoloader for the 125mm > same principle (which some consider flawed) as all the newer Russian T-series (T-64, T-72, T-80, T-90) and their derivatives (foreign licence copies and improved versions thereof) unless refitted with a bustle loader (some Ukrainian developed variants).

Depends, especially when you need an entire fleet,
your need for a ferrari,
operating cost comparison of the Ferrari
spares and stores for your Ferrari
Quality of subsystems for the Ferrari,
your capital and operating budget allocations for the ferrari.

It's always good to have options. say If your requirement is a Mitsubishi EVO III, you don't really need to spend 8 times to get a ferrari.

remember "wohi jhaag wohi safadi, agar kum daam me mile to koi yeh kyu le, wo na le, Nirma Super!!" ting tong

This assumes you can actually tell apart the Ferrari and the 'something like a Ferrari', qualitatively speaking.

A Lamborghini or McLaren could be considered 'something like a Ferrari'. Are you suggesting those are not so good?

Or does it depend on a) budget and b) taste/preference?

If someone offered me one of the three, I'ld say 'yes, please, thank you' always
If someone offered me a pick of one of these three .... mmmm, tough choice.
