Senior Indian officer held over teen's death

Srinagar, Indian-administered Kashmir (CNN) -- A senior paramilitary officer was arrested Thursday for his alleged role in the killing of a schoolboy, a death that prompted clashes between anti-India protesters and Indian security forces.

R.K.Birdi, the Indian border guards' commanding officer, was arrested after a trooper confessed that he shot the teenager last month on the orders of his boss, police officer Muzaffar Ahmad said.

The trooper, Lakhwinder Kumar, was arrested February 10 after the Border Security Force found he was involved in the February 5 shooting in a Srinagar suburb.

The 17-year old, Zahid Farooq Sheikh, was fatally shot in the chest. His death triggered anti-India protests and authorities had to impose a curfew in parts of the capital city to contain the public anger.

Police responded with tear gas and baton charges to disburse the mobs shouting pro-freedom slogans.

Before the arrests, the teen's family said he was shot by Indian security forces from a passing vehicle, but police said he was killed by a mysterious fire.

Back to the topic , I think Gvt should provide equipments like water canon, rubber bullet etc to be used when batton charge is not enough to control a vilolent mob. Not only in Kashmir, in other part of India (and in other places too I think) local anti-social eliments join in rally or pocession and turn it violent by throwing stones or setting fire. After the initiative they capitalise the opportunity to loot desered shops etc. On the other hand police take on the innocent people. I have personally witnessed such thing in Kolkata. Police should use equipments like rubber bullet or water jet to bring situation in control
to avoid casualties.
