Senate Demands Formal US Strategy to Stop China in South China Sea

. .
The PRC and ROC administrations both agree that ROC claims have a strong basis in international law.

You lie.

Paracel and Spratly is territory of Vietnam from hundreds year ago. There was no troubles with China.
RO China claims in 1948 is baseless.

What we do in our sovereign territory is nobody business.

China invaded with force and occupied Islands of Vietnam is illegal. Chinese aggressor get lost from territory of Vietnam.

Speaking as an Americans, during presidential elections, it does seemed "tough on china" rhetoric is huge among the conservatives. But that is just rhetoric, because the details are fuzzy. Beside the corporations ran thing, and the corporations love doing business with the Chinese. At the end of the day, the conservatives are but slave to the corporatist. The liberals are getting sick of it, the mentioned of possible conflict with China will make them throw up. Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria. Next up would be Yemen. We are too busy with the middle. Even among the warmongers populace, the Asian pivot had not always been popular among the comments I read on yahoo (which is more conservatives). Beside the news that main players in Europe joining China led bank is not favorable to Obama.

Well, the military budget was cut. I was thinking about joining the arm-force to pay school. But I recall there was a period of down sizing. But wait and see, if the democrats lost the 2016 election. Our government will have a gigantic war boner. I still think Yemen or some other middle east country. But let see how Abe do in front of congress, will he inspire the warmongers as well as Israel prime minister.

Though Abe and Dung had flex quite a bit of diplomatic power recently. I can't recall when Vietnam having so many strategic allies and or talking to many countries like this present time. This is better than being an isolationist. I always wish the Americans as a deterrence for war in Asia and not having the opposite effect.

. .
Let's see.

China: 9,600,000 km2
Little Japan (with no resources of any kind): 377,944 km2

A Chinese naval blockade will bring little Japan to its knees within one month.

Like I said, no one cares about weak and little Japan. The only exception is delusional Japanese.

Imagine Montana threatening to declare war on the entire United States. People would die of laughter. At least Montana has copper. Japan has nothing.

LOL! Good luck trying to blockade Japan. Considering what the U.S. is capable of in past and even in present of when helping allies, blockading is useless.

One military professor in China isn't the Chinese military, didn't stop anyone from using his quotes everywhere to prove points.

At most, we are equally biased.

LOL. Exactly so. Playing from Western media's book is nice. Love to read the reactions like "Eastern media," "RT spin" etc. China needs to learn from Russian in terms of information war.

RT and Sputnik are literally trashing US/Western international media. And they are extremely popular.

@senheiser , how did you manage that, really? :) We need to learn from you in that respect.

Taiwan is willing to cooperate with other SCS claimants, just as the Mainland is. However these other claimants do not follow international law, and the only thing bringing PH to the negotiating table is the fact that the PRC is unwilling to tolerate their shenanigans. Otherwise they would continue throwing their "weight" around like a 5 year old repeatedly prodding an adult with a sharp stick. MOFA (TW) has stated that it has no intention of cooperating with the PRC in claims but that's clearly not the case if you look at how Taiwanese academics and the military are reacting. Therefore, there's no way on earth we'd ever risk pissing off the mainland by joining hands with counter-claimants. We are one people with one history and shared culture even if we have political disagreements.

The PRC and ROC administrations both agree that ROC claims have a strong basis in international law. The PRC is the legal successor to these claims. To invalidate the claim is to invalidate the territorial integrity and international recognition of Taiwan. In that case Taiwan island is simply just another territory that the PRC has sole legal and historical claim to. That seems counter-intuitive to US strategy, but it's quite clear the US is a nation of hypocrites that sees Taiwan as only one chip to be thrown into the fire.

Excellent!

US Starts Flying Its Most Advanced Spy Planes Over South China Sea / Sputnik International

The strategic waters of the South China Sea are claimed by a confusing collection of various nations. The region’s strongest – and most vocal – stakeholder is China. On Thursday, the US Navy admitted that it is monitoring the area, launching its most advanced spy plane out of the Philippines.

The P-8A Poseidon is one the United States’ most advanced surveillance planes. It’s capable of both anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare, and is currently flying over the South China Sea. The US plans to use the aircraft to share “real time” details about activity in Philippine waters.

What is Really Inside the US 2015 National Security Strategy

“It was a remarkable opportunity to work alongside the members of the Filipino armed forces,” US Navy Lieutenant Matthew Pool told Reuters. “Sharing this aircraft’s capabilities with our allies only strengthens our bonds.”

Poseidons were the same planes used to hunt down missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 last April.

According to the Navy statement, the P-8A logged over 180 flight hours during a three week period which ended on February 21.

Before the Poseidon, the US flew P-3C Orions out of Philippine air bases. Those planes had operated since a 2012 security agreement.

Colonel Restituto Padilla, a spokesman for the Philippine military, said the Orions had been quietly replaced last year.

“We expect more surveillance planes to be deployed in the Philippines,” he told Reuters. “Increasing the frequency of rotation.”

While the US does not take official sides in disputes within the waterway, it does have an interest in aiding the Philippines, a close ally. The American government has repeatedly made calls against territorial aggression in the region, but China insists that US involvement only inflames hostility.

Nearly $5 trillion in trade passes through the body of water which stretches from the southern coast of China, to the northeastern shores of Malaysia. On Thursday, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper spoke before the Senate Armed Services Committee, claiming that China is undergoing an “aggressive” expansion of its South China Sea outposts.

“Although China is looking for stable ties with the United States, it’s more willing to accept bilateral and regional tensions in pursuit of its interests, particularly on maritime sovereignty issues,” Clapper said.

In addition to China and the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan, all lay claims to parts of the South China Sea.

Can you elaborate on this further. What does this cooperation entail. And what international law are we talking about. Speak to me as if I am ignorant (and in truth I am since I am not as much of a zealot like most people here on this issue) and point out specific so I can do a quick study up on. I don't like vague things that doesn't meant anything.

Not possible. Even if the USA was to do it, other USA allies won't follow through. Like this new Chinese led bank, Vietnam jump on board even with the whole South China Sea thing. Britain, France, Germany, and Italy already come through. IN coming months, South Korea, Japan, and Australia. China is just too big to be contained y sanctions. As for economical warfare, the Chinese and the Americans had been undermining each others for a long time now.
