Remember Jiang was still the party chief of Shanghai during June 4th, and was elevated to the national position only after the crackdown, rewarded for his peaceful handling of protest in Shanghai by Deng. So it is highly plausible that he didn't know what actually happened to the man. His answer seems hesitant and uncertain, whereas if he know that the man was executed, it would be far more deflective. And do also remember that number of student protest leaders were apprehended, but none executed.

There is zero reason for Jiang Zemin to know what happened to a single person throwing a tantrum. Does Obama know what happened to each of the occupied wall street protesters? Of course not. They are not exact person of significance.
