Security forces kill 5 militants in central Kashmir, police say

Five militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Ganderbal district
of Kashmir early on Friday, police said.
According to TV reports, police told that identity of
all the militants had been ascertained and none of
them was a local. Earlier on Monday it was reported that militants had
attacked a police patrol in Anantnag in Jammu & Kashmir killing one personnel after which combing operations had been launched in that area to nab the militants.

Security forces in Kashmir claimed to have killed five militants in an operation in Prang, Ganderbal in central Kashmir about 35kms from Srinagar.

According to a police spokesman,"Kangan Police and army's 24 Rashtriya Rifles killed five militants on the fringes of Najwan forest near Prang Ganderbal during the night."

"All five militants are believed to be non locals, their identity is being ascertained," he added.

However unconfirmed reports suggest Hizbul Mujahideen's district commander Assudulah was among those killed.

According to police sources, the operation was launched around midnight after security forces got specific information about movement of militants in the area.

"An ambush was laid and the militants were challenged while they were trying to cross the Sind river. The militants however fired at the security forces resulting in an encounter," a police official informed.

This group is believed to have been active in Ganderbal district since the last seven years. Police says the encounter is over but search operation is still on in the area.
