LAHORE: The National Crisis Management Cell, Ministry of Interior, has warned law enforcement agencies that three vehicles could be used in the Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIED) attacks and directed the authorities concerned for taking extensive security measures, The News has learnt.
A letter No 3/9/2009-(O&I)-1368 was issued from the Islamabad Office of National Crisis Management Cell, Ministry of Interior, on 19 January, 2011 to Home Secretary Punjab, Lahore, Inspector General of Police, Punjab, Lahore, DG Rangers Punjab, Lahore, Chief Commissioner ICT, Islamabad and IGP ICT, Islamabad with a subject Threat Alert-25.
The letter reads: Reportedly, following vehicles are likely to be used in the Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIED) attacks: a) Toyota Corolla car, white colour, Model 1994/1995, b) Toyota Corolla Car, beige colour, Model 1994/1995 and C) a Tuwllace car, white colour with blue lighting.
The Ministry of Interior has directed the authorities concerned for extreme vigilance, heightened security and preventive measures to avoid any untoward incident. It is pertinent to mention here that Majalis and processions would be held on the occasion of Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) on Tuesday (today) when the concluding ceremony of the Data Sahibs Urs would also be held. Both events are security-sensitive and possibility of the VBIED attacks is always there. Secret agencies have warned the police and other law enforcers to remain alert and make extra ordinary security arrangements on both the occasions. The Punjab government has also called the Rangers on Monday for security cover to the participants of Data Sahibs Urs and processions on the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS).
The Lahore Police have also been put on high alert in order to maintain peaceful atmosphere and harmony in the provincial metropolis and for this purpose, more than 12,000 police officials have been deployed to ensure peace. High-ups of the Lahore Police have ordered special surveillance and checking of all hotels, inns and bus and wagon stands to ward off any possibility of subversion and to ensure law and order on the Chelum and Urs. Besides, arrangements have also been made to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
Capital City Police Officer Aslam Tarin held a special meeting with the Ulema and organisers of Urs, Majalis and processions at the Police Lines, Qila Gujjar Singh, on Monday and briefed the participants of security measures.
The CCPO said that all entry and exit points of the city would be covered and rooftop deployment would be made on different routes. He directed that parking be made at a safe distance, preferably 200 metre away, from the venue of the processions and Urs, whereas mobile squads, motorbikes and cars of the Elite Force would also be deployed on the occasions. He said the Crises Management Centres had been established in the city, which would function round the clock, while a special control room had also been set up at the CCPOs office for coordination between various agencies.
The CCPO said that in order to maintain peace and harmony in the provincial metropolis during the Chelum of Hazrat Imam Hussain and Data Sahibs Urs, a comprehensive security plan had made after consultation with leaders and notables of the city. He directed the divisional SPs concerned to personally check the force deployment and patrolling of mobile squads. He said he would make surprise inspections in order to review the security arrangements.
