SCMP: Number of Americans studying in mainland China falls sharply, but Chinese students still flock to US

.
China's survival and development depends completely upon a large number of Chinese getting some good higher education in the US, a proportion of them then returning to CCP Ops in mainland China, a portion staying on in the US to gain access to intellectual property and design which they will then bring to China and ofcourse a third portion settling down completely in the US and enjoy some freedoms.

That makes 0 sense to study abroad and then return home. Diploma is only worth with experience. With 0 job experience in the fields they study they can kick their diploma into next trash bin. Why they do foreign study in the first place? Waste of time and money.

Also note how with the > 1 million Chinese who have emigrated to the US over the last 20 years not many are sending their kids to China for a University education.

The majority of US students sent to China were from Chinese immigrant families.
Now even they are ditching sending their kids to China.

the job market for high pays is tough now. I think those chinese graduates returning home haven´t found jobs in the US. just returning to China because of homesick makes no sense. they will land with much lower pay job if they can find any.

Most have to go back. There is only a limited number of students who can stay through programs like H1-B or having a company go through the paperwork of sponsorship.

The Chinese here on PDF keeping talking about how a higher percentage of students are going back to China but most of it is due to simple math. You send more students over but the available slots are limited...well the more that have to go back.

As if all 289,000 students would simply be allowed to stay in the US indefinitely. Of course more of them are going back compared to 25 years ago when that number was probably only 20,000 and most could stay. So of course 25 years ago the percentage staying was higher than it is today due to simple math not by a change in preference.

of course getting a job in the US is not easy. getting a work visa in the US is even harder.

The work visa were taken over by the Indian consulting companies with their H1B lottery scheme.

Another thing you didn't mention is US started to enforce the Visa Condition more seriously now than maybe in the 1980s or 1990s.

F, M and J Visa (The three type of Student Visa in the US) are non-immigrant visa, which mean once your study is completed then technically you will have 6 months (or something like that) to leave the US, unless they can change to another visa for further temporary stay or a resident visa (like K or EB visa) the only other way is going dark (or became an illegal alien)

The issue here is, it's a different world for Illegal Alien in the US now than say prior to 2000, there are low - no economic prospect for illegal alien now which many has been in the US legally would know and thus return home if a further visa is refused and as you said, opportunities for further visa is limited. .
