CHANDIGARH: Having unlocked the gate to freedom for over 300 Pakistanis who had been cooling their heels in Indian jails, human rights activist
Ranjan Lakhanpal felt cheated on Wednesday.

How can they dismiss Sarabjit Singh’s review petition without proper legal representation? he asked, reacting to news of death row Indian prisoner Sarabjit’s mercy plea being turned down as his counsel failed to appear in court.

Rattled by the development, Lakhanpal, 54, who had taken up Sarabjit’s case with many authorities on numerous occasions in India as well as Pakistan, decided his next move in no time. ‘‘I will visit Pakistan in July and will personally take up his issue with authorities concerned. Along with Ansar Burney, I will meet the Pakistan president and will plead mercy for Sarabjit,’’ he said.

As the Indian government too hoped Islamabad would take a sympathetic and humanitarian view in the case, Lakhanpal said, ‘‘Unfortunately, human beings are used as tools for political reasons.’’ Explaining the legal procedure involved, Lakhanpal said, ‘‘Laws in both countries are same. Criminal cases and appeals can’t be dismissed on ground that lawyers failed to appear before court.”

NEW DELHI: Human Rights Activist Ansar Burney will file a fresh mercy petition on Thursday to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on behalf of
Sarabjit Singh, an Indian facing the gallows in that country. Singh's petition to review his death sentence was rejected by Pakistan's Supreme Court on Wednesday.

"Now, I am going to file a fresh Mercy petition before the President of Pakistan tomorrow, June 25, and from my side I am confident that I will not allow Pakistan Government to hang an innocent person only on the basis that he is Non-Muslim or Indian national," Burney said.

Sarabjit, 43, has been on death row in Pakistan since he was convicted for his alleged involvement in four bomb blasts 18 years ago. The blasts, which took place in 1990, killed 14 people but Sarabjit's family insists that he was wrongly convicted.

Burney, former Pakistani federal minister for human rights, condemned the decision of the Supreme Court on the review petition. “Sarabjit was to be hanged on April 1 last year but the mercy appeal by Ansar Burney Trust put off his execution indefinitely,” the activist said.

"How a court, if there is any justice in that court, can punish a person to hang without providing him any lawyer and in a case where the prisoner already spent 18 long years in a death cell that is more than a life sentence?" Burney questioned.

An Expert Advisor on human rights in the United Nations at Geneva, Burney said that the apex court treated Sarabjit Singh not as prisoner but as Non-Muslim (Kafir) and Indian national, and that "is a murder of justice".

In conclusion:

Indian national Sarabjit Singh is a terrorist who killed 14 innocent Pakistanis in 1990, he confessed on national Pakistani television.

His sentence should be death.

How ........... how did you conclude that ?

.
That is what he was told isn't it, that is why he did it. He was told by the 'great man who provides relief to every body', Mr Hafeez Sayeed himself.

do you have proof that the 2 even met? If so, please forward the documents to me.

Jamat ud-Dawa not only condemned the attacks, they are against all violence against innocent people.

indian just want Hafiz Saeed arrested because they know that he has good influence on people in occupied Kashmir (especially Sri Nagar).

this is the only reason. Because the people of Sri Nagar are ready for liberation, which is why everyday they are waving Pakistani flags

yai baat hai na?

.
How ........... how did you conclude that ?

how do you conclude that he is innocent?

he confessed to his crime. Why do you think his defence lawyer never showed up to the courts?

had the hindustany consulate been interested in the case the lawyer would surely have been there

As i instructed you earlier, contact the Press Foundation of Pakistan if you have any questions/comments/concerns that need to be raised.

Hmm....
Ever heard of forced confession ?

See the point I am trying to make is he (sarbajit) now says that the confession that was shown on TV was a forced confession and he actually is innocent
For example ... in India ... your confession is only valid if you have said it in front of a Magistrate.

I will break it down for you in even simpler terms

Exclusive: new film of Mumbai gunmen - Channel 4 News

The confession given by Ajmal in this video do not hold good in front of a court

I hope you are trying to see what I am trying to say

I am talking of the confession he gave on that video... did you even see that video ?

Regarding kasab..he is being given a free and a fair trail unlike sarabjit whose was denied a free and a fair trail and his confession was a forced one.
He says that he is innocent and crossed the border unknowingly when he was drunk.

Sarabjit would have been a free man if the last indian spy we freed had kept his mouth shut about being a spy and the indian govt had not sent a dead tortured pakistani body back in return......just think for one moment it was the other way around and the indian freed a pakistan who said he was not a spy and once he arrived on pakistani soil he started boasting that he was a spy and you indians got a dead indian in return, i wonder what you would do the next time?
