Tests prove held man is top Saudi militant linked with Iran embassy attack in Beirut

The tests confirmed that the detained man is Majid Al Majid, the commander of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, the army said yesterday.
The group had claimed responsibility for a number of attacks, including the November 19 twin bombings at the Iranian embassy in Beirut that killed at least 23 people and wounded dozens.
Al Majid is being held in a military hospital because “he is in poor health”, a medical official said.
Another official familiar with the investigation said the interrogation of Al Majid “has been delayed because he is in poor health”, and that the suspect is being “heavily guarded” at the Baabda military hospital near Beirut.
According to the medical source, who had been treating Al Majid before his arrest without knowing who he was, he suffers from kidney failure and requires regular dialysis.
“On December 27, the hospital where Al Majid was being treated contacted the Red Cross to arrange his transfer to another hospital,” said the source.
But before the suspect arrived at the second facility, “the Lebanese army intelligence intercepted the ambulance and arrested Al Majid,” the source said, adding that neither the hospital nor the ambulance teams had prior knowledge of who Al Majid was.
The Saudi ambassador, Ali Awad Assiri, praised the arrest, saying Al Majid “is a terrorist who attacked his own country before attacking the Iranian embassy. The monarchy has been searching for him long before he staged this”.
On Thursday, Mr Assiri said: “He has been wanted by the Saudi courts for a long time. Should DNA tests prove the person detained is indeed Majid, we will be pleased with the arrest.”
The report comes a day after a Lebanese minister said Al Majid had been arrested by the army’s intelligence services and was being interrogated “in secret”.
Beirut families of the victims in the Iranian embassy bombings said they want Al Majid to stand trial in Lebanon.
“This Saudi criminal should be tried in Lebanon where he committed his grisly crimes,” one family said yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Iranian embassy in Beirut asked on Thursday to be involved in the investigation into the double suicide bombing.
The Lebanese foreign minister, Adnan Mansour, said he had received a note from the Iranian embassy in Beirut that included “a request for access to the current investigation with Majid Al Majid, with him being one of the suspects in the explosion that targeted the embassy”.
He said he would raise the request with the relevant authorities. The Abdullah Azzam Brigades group was designated in the United States in 2012 as a “terrorist organisation”.
The group was formed in 2009 and is believed to have branches in both the Arabian Peninsula and Lebanon.
The Lebanese unit is named after Ziad Al Jarrah, a Lebanese man who took part in the September 2001 attacks on the United States.
It has sporadically fired rockets into northern Israel, and the Brigades also claimed responsibility for the 2010 bombing attack of a Japanese oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Abdullah Azzam Brigades is named for the Palestinian mentor of Osama bin Laden. He was killed in a 1989 bomb blast.
According to Islamist sites, Al Majid was revealed to be the leader of the group in 2012.
Hizbollah and Iran are allied with the Syrian regime, and it has dispatched fighters to battle the uprising alongside government forces.
In claiming the embassy bombing, the group warned of more attacks in Lebanon if Hizbollah kept sending troops to support the Syrian president, Bashar Al Assad.
In 2009, Lebanon sentenced Al Majid in absentia to life in prison for belonging to a different extremist group, the Al Qaeda-inspired Fatah Al Islam.
