Capt. Ayed Al-Shamrani, a pilot of an F-15C Eagle, immediately responded to the call which was made by the 13th squadron of the Saudi Royal Air Forces from the Dhahran military base. (Saudi Gazette)

The current Saudi-led airstrikes part of Operation Decisive Storm against Houthi rebels in Yemen have brought to memory stories of great courage shown by Saudi Royal Air Force pilots during the first Gulf war to liberate Kuwait from the Iraqi occupation under former Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein.

At 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, 1991, an American Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) and two British ships issued warnings that three Iraqi warplanes were about to attack. The three Iraqi fighters were in Dassault Mirage F1 aircraft equipped with Exocet anti-ship missiles.

The warning said the three fighter jets had entered Saudi airspace from the northeastern part of the country and were flying at low altitude along the coast in what was to be an obvious attack against coalition warships stationed in the waters of the Arabian Gulf.

Capt. Ayed Al-Shamrani, a pilot of an F-15C Eagle, immediately responded to the call which was made by the 13th squadron of the Saudi Royal Air Forces from the Dhahran military base.

He intercepted the attacking planes and used solar-guided short-medium AIM-9 anti-aircraft missiles to down two of them in a matter of 30 seconds. The third Iraqi warplane fled the scene after hurriedly firing an Exocet missile that fell into Gulf waters without harming anyone.

Wow I heard about heat seeking Air-2-Air Sidewinders but this Sidewinder is something special

Saiful Azam of Bangladesh airforce is one of only 22 "living eagles" in the world. He flew with PAF and was deputised and flew for Jordan and Iraq and holds the distinction of shooting down most Israeli fighters. He also downed IAF birds in the indo-pak wars as well.

Gathering of Eagles Foundation :: Azam, Saiful

M.M.Alam was ethically Bihari but his family was also from Patna in Bangladesh although he chose to stay in Pakistan post Bangladesh independence whilst Saiful Azam came back to Bangladesh and was instrumental in setting up Bangladesh airforce.

Probably a Pakistani pilot there to train the Saudis, or fill their gaps ;) lol I feel like such a troll. Though this as been a common practise in the past.

I think Arab offsprings are as good as any other non-Arabs. The basic difference is that in Muslim countries there are STORIES liberating all over and not the TRUTH at all. In many wars local military men have shown up their mights and they are still doing it well.

Though they were weak before but they have learn a lot from the last 3-4 decades. I am sure they are looking to build up something on their own.
