Dr. Spanta's brother was killed just one day after he gave a rather provocative interview against Pakistan. Dr. Spanta is Afghanistan's influential National Security Adviser and former Foreign Minister. Wonder if the Taliban are trying to exploit the situation to drive a further wedge between Islamabad and Kabul - in any case this is more bad news and will only further poison the atmosphere.

ISLAMABAD: Walking an extra mile, Adviser on Foreign Affairs and National Security, Sartaj Aziz, announced that he was going on an official trip to Kabul on Saturday to prepare for President Hamid Karzai’s visit to Islamabad, Tuesday’s outrageous rhetoric from Kabul notwithstanding.

Earlier, it were two telephone calls between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and President Hamid Karzai, in which it was agreed that Aziz would visit Kabul to revive the high-level talks between the two sides and Sharif will invite Karzai to Pakistan.

Aziz announced this at a joint press conference with the British foreign secretary, William Hague, at the Foreign Office today.“We are committed to peace and stability in Afghanistan which is of vital importance to Pakistan. Our government will take all steps for regional peace and stability”, he remarked in his opening statement. “I will be visiting Kabul on Saturday.”

Britain echoed these views with Hague assuring that the UK would work in partnership with Pakistan providing expertise, and support of Pakistan in developing strategy of counter terrorism. “Good relations with Pakistan’s neighbour are vital to security and UK and Pakistan agree on the importance of peace‚ stability and security in Afghanistan and support Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process”, added Hague.

Sartaj Aziz’s visit to Kabul at a time when on Wednesday news came in of the assassinated of Ahmad Wali Jan, the brother of Afghanistan’s national security adviser Rangin Dadfar Spanta. Spanta’s outrageous interview was made on Tuesday, a day before his brother was taken out.Hitting out at Pakistan Spanta said that peace initiatives cannot take place until Pakistan ‘allows’ the Taliban to talk to the Afghan government.

There was disbelief at the Foreign Office when Spanta said: “Pakistan has a small territory which is always vulnerable to Indian missiles. Coming to Afghanistan and placing its weapons and also a puppet regime in Afghanistan was always part of its strategic depth”.

Spokesman at the Foreign Office refused to be provoked when asked about the latest charges. “Peace and reconciliation is the only way forward to bring peace and stability in Afghanistan. There will be challenges, but we need patience and perseverance in the larger interest of peace in Afghanistan. All stakeholders in the Afghan peace process would need to engage constructively”, he responded.

Why is Pakistan doing this knowing fully well that Karzai is a puppet on a short string who will be out on a limb soon? He doesn't have much say now and will not in the future. Why go the extra mile to mollycoddle him now?
