Sanete Standing commitee visits POF
ISLAMABAD, Mar 3 (APP): The Senate Standing Committee on Defence on Wednesday highlighted the need for adoption of measures aiming at economic revival of Pakistan Ordnance Factory.
The Committee, chaired by Lt. Gen (R) Javed Ashraf Qazi, was given detailed briefing by the POF Board Chairman Lt. Gen Shujaat Zamir Dar during its daylong visit to the defence production complex.
On the occasion, Chairman of the Committee stated that multi-pronged strategy was need of the hour to keep the POF's ball rolling at a pace. Elaborating, he said that the POF may be accorded autonomous status as envisaged in 1961 Ordnance.
He said that POF complex comprises 24 factories including 14 of commercial nature with rest 10 for defense purpose. He said the complex needs to be given autonomy at individual level and every of its segment should be made bound to run independently and earn profits accordingly.
The Committee was unanimous of the view that any political pressure for further appointments in the organization be resisted with the recommendation to the government to immediately impose ban on fresh appointments other than essential and for technical sector.
The Committee also recommended that a body be formed for rationalization of the existing strength of staff with the aim to decrease financial burden.
The Committee viewed that Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani may undertake a visit of this important defence unit and take on the spot decisions for remedy of various challenges confronting it.
Earlier, the Chairman POF said that the Complex needs US $ 250 million injection for the overhaul of the existing machinery at various factories. "In some of the cases the working age of various machines, installed in factories, has been over thirty years," he said.
He said due to financial constraints, the POF which had been undertaking sizeable exports to various countries could not manage supply orders for various articles from abroad.
The Chairman said out of total POF budget, almost 75 percent is being spent in non-development sector including salaries of staff, while rest 25 percent is consumed over development and procurement of raw material.
The Committee members Sardar Ali Khan and Muhammad Adeel besides Minister for Defence Production Abdul Qayyum Jatoi appreciated the candid spirit of the Chairman POF and assured to render all possible efforts to help resolve the issues faced by the Complex.
Later, the Committee visited various sections at the Complex and appreciated POF's achievements despite resource constraint.
