Institute for International Finance, the Washington-based global association of financial services, said today in its report on the Middle East and North Africa that economic sanctions imposed on Iran have pushed the country into recession. (Reuters, 10 December)

Crude oil exports have dropped sharply, the Iranian rial has plummeted and inflation has soared this year, with GDP expected to shrink by 3.5 percent in 2012/2013 Iranian fiscal year.

“With crude oil prices holding at around $110 per barrel, (Iranian) government revenues from oil (which accounted for about half of its total revenues in previous years) could drop by at least 40 percent,” the report said. (Reuters, 10 December)

IIF also forecast that inflation will average around 50 percent this year, up from 26.5 in 2011.
The IIF report notes that the worsening economic conditions could have serious political and social implications as Iran approaches mid-2013 presidential elections.

Any country going for nuclear weapons after 1970 was sanctioned more or less based on its economy.
There is a compromise here.

So far, the sanctions has not really hit your country. Your annual oil income is decreased by 40 billion $. You decreased the imports about the same amount. Real sanction will come when you do a real nuclear test.

Maybe of topic but a question to Iranians in Iran.

Can the people on the streets se the effects of the sanctions how does it effect the common Iranians?

People have been seeing the impact for years and years now

Basically since 2007, exactly when Nejad and his mafia buddies got to power, things in Iran went downhill. Inflation soared and Nejad's big mouth and Khamenei's talibanesque policies allowed the yanks and the jews to convince Europe to get Iran sanctioned. Things will get bad before they'll get better I'm afraid.

I'm not worried though, Iran is so god damn rich in natural resources that we can erase a century of recession in a matter of years once things get back on track. Plus we have many major companies that are waiting for their chance to shine in the international arena (right now they can't even import primary materials, let alone export their products properly). The long-term future of Iran is extremely bright, but the short-term future of Iran is riddled with recessions.

I frankly don't know what's gonna happen as things get worse. Either the people will finally rise up or there will be a coup inside the regime and the mullahs will be sent packing (in the latter scenario Iran will become like today's Russia in that the old system got collapsed and replaced by a new system, but the people in charge of the new system are still the same good ol' boys).

These brutal sanctions exactly show how civilized the westerns and Americans are . They also show how much Americans like people of Iran (according to their president that wanted to save Iranians from their governors) .

Killing people is not just shooting at them or bombing them . Sanctions can do that too . Some of them (the sanctions) even don't allow Iran to buy medicines , every single person dies cos of lack of medicine is their fault and Iranians will never forget that .

I don't think Surenas is an Iranian as he's just a d i c k but I just ask the ones supporting the US and their puppets to think why the US and European leaders are spending such money and time to take Iran down ? why they're not doing that in Arabian countries or Turkey and etc ? what has Iran or Iranian governors done to them or their people ?

Get over it.
If you don't want the sanctions then drop your nuclear weapons program and stop supporting terrorist militias. Problem solved.

I don't think Iran trying to reach nukes and if tries its not a problem . why can't Iran have the nukes when the US , France ,England , China , Russia and even Israel have hundreds of them ?

If terrorist militias are Hamas and Hezbollah that shows how ignorant you are cos they're fighting for their land and if they hadn't existed there wouldn't have been neither Palestine nor Lebanon . Problems will be solved when Iran knee for them and kiss their as$ like what Arabian , Turkish leaders doing .
