Samsung Electronics Co Ltd plans to begin building a new memory chip production line in China in late March, a spokesman said on Thursday, as the tech giant ramps up efforts to boost NAND flash technology to meet future demand.

The tech giant said in August last year that it expected to invest 7 billion US dollars over the next three years to expand its NAND memory chip production in China’s northwestern city of Xi’an, but had not specified a future schedule.

The rapidly growing data center market, which needs more memory capacity to handle increasing data traffic, is expected to underpin revenue growth and margins for Samsung’s NAND Flash business in 2018, research provider Trendforce said.

Samsung’s revenue from NAND in the fourth quarter of 2017 rose 9.8 percent from the previous quarter to 6.17 billion US dollars, Trendforce said, as demand from both smartphone and server markets lifted shipments and average price.

Samsung will formally begin the process near month-end at Xi’an, earmarked for NAND flash production, the spokesman said, but did not give any other details.

Samsung Electronics shares have risen about 13 percent from early March on an improved outlook for the memory chip market, putting to rest concerns that the recent boom might end, analysts said.

“Memory chips are solid. For DRAM chips, server demand is very strong,” said Kwon Sung-ryul, an analyst at DB Investment & Securities.

“NAND flash chip shipments and price movements are moving within expectations, but there’s a chance that supply will become tighter again in the second half of 2018 due to rising demand.”

The expansion is not expected to affect memory chip supply until 2019 at the earliest, analysts said.

Trump will go mad and make funny eyerolls. Everybody should have invested in new SP12 to MAGA.

build chip facilities in China, assemble phones in supa powan markets, smart!
They know their phones are increasingly unpopular in China.

Samsung must have gone completely asinine continuing to invest huge sums of money in a coutry that is about to collapse at any minute.

They are indeed out of mind. Why not invest in the world's largest consumption market with population dividend?

They made a big strategic blunder and paying a price. I guess they worry more about Korean auto than smart phones. If Korean auto companies misses out on the world's largest auto market, then, no MAGA can save them.

Besides, they will remain dangerously open to early-day Twitter emotions of the US government.

it's true.
China's auto&phone&ANYTHING markets are simply too big, no.1 nearly in any goods.
Samsung stands for 1/4 of korean GDP, they have to be discreet next time.

China is ramping up 3D NAND/DRAM research and production big time with Tsinghua Unigroup announcing 3 projects worth $84 billion for 9 fabs. South Korea is paranoid that China will entirely displace their status in the international market and also China's domestic market forever. By investing in China they can have a foot in the door.

We are seeing a snippet of the world's consolidation into a G2 industrial system.

South Korea is always paranoid about losing their technological edge, but I don't think they ever will lose their crown in semiconductors unless something drastic happens like a war with North Korea. They are the only Asian country who has succeeded in designing microarchitectures, not just manufacturing. I can see China closing the gap with Korea but then stagnating and following whatever Korea or the US comes up with. This investment is just another example of what I'm talking about. It's a massive investment for sure, but it's not about developing their a new process technology - it's just about copying what other countries have invented previously.

This reminds me of the time when Taiwan is looking into micro-LED to replace OLED. All the Taiwanese and Apple fanboys said that this would be the death of Samsung's display unit, and yet micro-LED has turned into vapor-ware. Taiwan is now massively behind in display technology and is stuck with an inferior LCD technology. Let's not forget the SONY fanboys and Japanese nationals who said that JDI's WRGB OLED will be the greatest OLED tech ever. You know your display technology is massively behind when Apple would rather pay a premium and stick with Samsung's displays.

It is just for several years since China's government decided to support its semiconductor industry. If I'm not wrong, Samsung entered this field since 1980's. Is it laughable for you that China is in following stage now?

And how do you know if China won't follow Japan's footsteps and stagnate? Japan was also thought to be the next semiconductor powerhouse back in the 80s, yet they've only been able to compete on transistor density and not microarchitecture. Even in transistor density, they've fallen massively behind their rivals. This is why Japan has never had an IBM or Intel of their own.

Isn't it a bit too premature to claim that China won't follow the same patterns almost every other Asian country followed? You guys are acting like you'll take over the entire semiconductor industry when nobody knows much of anything yet.

1. Japan is declining in almost every field. China is rising in almost every field. Japan is not a good sample for China to predict the future development.

2. China's semiconductor industry is strongly backed by Chinese government. Which has infinite resources. This is something Japan or Taiwan doesn't have. Take the display industry for example. You can check this link to see how China's domestic display producer grew with government support.

3. China's industry covers almost every field. China can support its semiconductor industry by creating a complete industrial chain for it. S.Korea on the other hand, has to import all the critical equipment for producing the semiconductors from other countries.

4. China has much much more engineers than Japan, S.Korea or Taiwan.

5. Taiwan will be part of China within 20 years. You know what that means.
