Salman Khurshid says India close to Areva nuclear deal: report

Areva deal is more than 22 billion dollars and its output will be more than 10000MW when completed.
it will be the first project of areva (i read some where )

and
MMRCA if reached will be more than 25 billion dollars with weapon package etc.

so approx 50 billion dollars

and sub deal and mirage upgradation too ..

Yes, u are right, currently areva reactor deal is for just 2 reactors but NPCIL has plans to set up in all six of these reactors - 1650*6 = 9900 MW total capacity. But currently the deal will be only for 2 reactors, India had earlier signed MOU for supply of nuclear reactor, fuel for 25 years & services for 2 of these reactors worth $7 billion in total, so for 6 the price will be more than $ 21-22 billions:

Combining this figures with my earlier post, French are easily going to walk away with $ 70 Billions in there pockets for next 10-15 years (& people say the MMRCA deal is dead :rolleyes: Only a fool will let go these $70 billions as any effect on MMRCA means the French are not going to get other deals from India as well).

The EPR (European Pressurized Reactors) design has several active and passive protection measures against accidents:

1. Four independent emergency cooling systems, providing the required cooling of the decay heat that continues for 1 to 3 years after the reactor's initial shutdown (i.e. 300% redundancy).
2. Leaktight containment around the reactor.
3. An extra container and cooling area if a molten core manages to escape the reactor (see containment building).
4. Two-layer concrete wall with total thickness 2.6 meters, designed to withstand impact by aeroplanes and internal overpressure.

Rafale primarily brings new technology.

For Areva, more than the technology (if some tech transfer is involved) .... it's the cost of nuclear power per unit, which is important.

If Areva reactors produce 1600 MW x 6 = about 10,000 MW at rates far cheaper than coal or LNG, then why not.

Nuclear reactors are costlier to build.. but there are very low recurring cost .. the fuel cost is very very low compared to burning coal or LNG on a sustained basis.

However, our demands are so high.. that we don't have the option to choose between nuclear or coal.

It has to be both .. and beyond. Hydro-electric, though renewable, is most costly in terms of social costs in terms of relocating people. Probably most new hydro-electric plants will only by in the himalayas or in nepal / bhutan. I don't expect much more in the deccan region like the sardar sarover over Narmada.

Yes, they are ofcourse different, but do u really think if the French play hardball on MMRCA front & if the talks collapses, there will be no impact on other fronts?? Thats why i said only a fool will let go $ 70 billions for gaining some advantage in the MMRCA deal, it will be about long term benefits vs short term gains, i am sure that French are sane enough.

As for nuclear reactors, no matter how much some people object, we have no other option but to go for it. We are energy dependent nation growing at the second fastest pace in the world, currently we import 70-80% of crude oil which have severe impact on our forex reserves & it will only increase with time to more than 90%. We have to explore every possible option we have to develop energy - nuclear, coal, solar, wind, hydroelectricity, etc.

Plans are already in place to increase the current generation capacity of nuclear energy from 4500+ MW (2-3% of total power generation) to 63000MW by 2032 (10% of total power generation). For that we are bringing in every nation that can help us build nuclear reactor, give equipment, fuel, etc.

approx. $5 billions for scorpenes.

$4-6 billions for Areva reactors.

$20 billions for MMRCA.

$ 3 billions for mirage upgrade.

maybe $5-7 billion for N-MMRCA.

maybe P-75I i.e. $10 billion

(am i forgetting anything??)

close to $ 50 billions :agree:
$1 BN for M2K UPG weapons package. $1 BN for A330 MRTT with strong possiblity of follow on orders for IAF and Seperare orders for IN.

There of course is many more deals we won't know about.
