The French company Sagem announced on 24 September that it has signed a "commercial and industrial collaboration agreement" with the Egyptian company AOI-Aircraft Factory to "address the requirements of the Egyptian Ministry of Defence [MoD]" for Patroller unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Sagem did not specifically say that the Egyptian MoD has ordered Patrollers, but said the AOI-Aircraft Factory will provide "system support and commission" for UAVs as well as set up a "dedicated training centre in Egypt to train staff to for the operation and maintenance of Sagem's drone systems".

It added that the Egyptian company "could handle final assembly of Patroller drone in its Egyptian plants".

Egypt set to field Patroller UAV, as industrial collaboration deal announced

Egypt looks set to field the Sagem (Safran) Patroller medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), after the manufacturer signed a collaboration agreement with a domestic partner to address the requirements of the country's Ministry of Defence.

The agreement, which was announced by Sagem on 24 September, will see the French defence company team with Egypt's AOI-Aircraft Factory for the in-country final assembly and support of the Patroller MALE UAV. The agreement also covers the setting up of a dedicated training centre in Egypt to train staff for the operation and maintenance of Sagem's portfolio of unmanned aircraft systems.

The Patroller UAV, which utilises a Stemme S15 motor glider as the platform aircraft, is designed to operate autonomously for up to 30 hours at an operational altitude of 20,000 ft. The turboprop aircraft is powered by one 84.6 kW (113.4 hp) Rotax 914 F turbocharged flat-four engine, giving it a maximum speed of 300 km/h. In terms of range, the Patroller's line-of-sight datalinks afford it a radius of operation of 108 n miles (200 km; 124 miles), while its satellite communications link means it can operate out to 1,080 n miles (2,000 km; 1,242 miles).
