AHMEDABAD: Mock raids were carried out on coastal check posts along Gujarat's 1,600-km long coastline on Wednesday and Thursday to assess the preparedness of security forces in handling seaborne threats as part of the bi-annual maritime coastal security exercise - Sagar Kavach.

For the first time, Sagar Kavach was conducted conjointly for Gujarat, Daman & Diu and Maharashtra and it saw the participation of harbour tugs, patrol boats, ships, aircraft and UAVs of Indian Coast Guard, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, BSF, Marine Police and Customs. The maritime security exercise was introduced after the attack on Mumbai by Pakistani terrorists on 26/11/2008.
The security forces were divided into red and blue teams and tasked to carry out simulated attacks and also defend the posts during the exercise. The red force under the direct control of Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (NW), Gandhinagar, was tasked to evade the security cover and carry out simulated attacks. Plans of maneuvering the vessels were a closely-guarded secret, till the exercise was over, an official release said.

The joint exercise achieved synergy in operations in all spheres of coastal security against threats, ranging from unauthorized access of vessels through sea using commandeered fishing boats, capture of high value targets, attack on offshore installations, threat to industries along the coast and infiltration through creeks. The exercise was also aimed at checking and validating the coastal security helpline no 1093, the release added.
